The Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College (GSMC) is one of the oldest medical colleges and amongst the earliest teaching and medical care providing institutions in India. It provides training to nearly two thousand students in undergraduate, postgraduate and super specialty medical courses. The King Edward Memorial Hospital, which was set up in the year 1926, is often associated with the college. It is amongst the foremost medical care providing institutions in India. These institutions also maintain a nursing institution.
Located in Mumbai, Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College is closely attached to India`s freedom struggle. When qualified Indian nationals were denied attachments as teachers and doctors to the Grant Medical College, Mumbai, few groundbreaking Indian doctors who had studied in UK decide to set up their own medical college. It was decided that only Indian nationals would be admitted as teachers and doctors. This led to the establishment of the Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College through a handsome fund donated by the heirs of Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas, an affluent merchant of Bombay.
Seth Gordhandas Sunderdas Medical College is known for providing superior treatment facilities in all fields of medicine and surgery. The institute is well equipped with ultra modern equipments and state of the art technological institutions.
At present the King Edward Memorial Hospital is maintained by the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai, which provides medical facilities to the needy people of the society.
