Shoulder and neck massage provides great relief after a hectic day at office. It can be done with the help of a partner. For this, the partner upon whom the massage would be applied should be lying on his/her back. Then apply oil as per choice (it can also be aromatherapy oil) to partner's shoulders and neck. Experts say massaging with oil gives body's immune system a boost.
Steps of Shoulder and Neck Massage
Begin effleuraging by placing both hands on the upper chest, fingers facing towards each other.
Now, slowly pull hands across the chest and out to the shoulders. Curve the hands round the shoulders and under them and then bring hands into meet at the back of the neck.
Stroke up the neck to the base of the skull. Repeat four or five times.
Gently knuckle the chest and shoulders. To knuckle make the hands into relaxed fists, and move the knuckles in circular movements.
Now, gently turn partner's head to one side and stroke along the top of the shoulder and the side of the neck. Repeat three times.
Repeat the above sequence, but circle the fingers this time. Do this three times.
Now turn partner's head to the other side and repeat the third and the fourth movements. Return the head to the centre.
Slide the hands down at the back of partner as far as possible to reach comfortably. Find the groove each side of the spine with fingers. Pull hands up the spine with a little pressure on the groove each side. Repeat three times.
Cup both hands under partner's head, with fingers resting in the base of the skull. Lift the head slightly and then gently pull in the front. Lower the head slowly and repeat.
Hold the back of the head in one hand and move it slowly towards the left shoulder while gently pressing down on the right shoulder with the other hand. Bring the head back to the centre and then repeat on the other side.
Finish with some effleurage movements as began.
