Dr. Bhagwan Das was born on 12th January, in the year 1869 at Varanasi. He was a very brilliant student. After completing his graduation he served as a deputy collector in the Government office. Bhagwan Das was immensely influenced by Dr. Annie Besant .He left the Government service job and starter learning religion and philosophy. In 1894 he joined the Theosophical Society.After the division of the Theosophical Society he took part of the Theosophical Society Adyar. Bhagwan Das protested against the "Order of the Star in the East" of Jiddu Krishnamurti in this society. He was associated with Indian National Congress and participated in the Non-cooperation movement. For the active participation in the Freedom movement he was imprisoned several times. Bhagwan Das established Central Hindu College in collaboration with Dr. Annie Basent. This institution is presently known as Benaras Hindu University. He was the founder president of the Kashi Vidya Pith, a national University. Bhagwan Das was the member of Hindustani Culture Society and was selected as the president of the National community on Communal Riots. He was also nominated as the member of the Central Legislative Assembly of undivided India. Bhagwan Das was very well versed in Sanskrit. He wrote a number of books in Sanskrit and Hindi language. The subjects of these books are mostly based on Indian philosophy, culture and religion. He always tried to promote the idea of synthesis of human community around the world. Bhagwan Das was awarded the Bharat Ratna -highest national award of India in 1955. He passed away on 18th September in the year 1958.
