Vaikom Temple Sculpture Of Kottayam, Kerala, Indian SculptureIt was after the 3rd century AD that an individual temple sculpture of Kerala developed. Before that the temple building style of Kerala closely resembled that of Tamil Nadu. The native Keralite temples have been modeled on the utilitarian residential types. Building materials, such as, stone, brick, laterite and wood have been used as building materials. In fact all these materials were mixed and then utilized to construct the temples in Kerala.

The primary deities worshipped in Kerala temples are lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. Other deities include Bhagawati, Sastha, Sankaranarayana and Anantasaayi. Dictated by the topography the temples in Kerala have been built in a style so that they can endure the monsoon conditions and are in sync with the thick forests. Hence the roofs are pointed and covered with copper sheets. The architectural elements of the Kerala temples include `sree kovil` (garbhagriha), gopurams, namaskara mandapams, dwaja stambham, prakarams and Kuttambalam (theatre hall). The temple sculpture of Kerala displays amazing stucco and stone works. Wood has a key role to play in the sculpture and architecture of the Kerala temples.
