In 1993 his first Tamil film, Amaravathi was released. It was his first film as a leading man. The

Kadhal Kottai brought recognition for Ajith Kumar. In this film he plays the role of an anonymous lover. Ajith`s first big budget venture was Aasai but it was released after Agathiyan`s Vaanmathi. The latter and Kadhal Kottai established him as a romantic hero. With Ullasam Ajith Kumar established himself as one of the highest paid stars in the Tamil film industry.
Vaali (1999) gave his career a boost. Ajith Kumar is seen in a double role in the Tamil film. One of the characters was that of a deaf and mute man who is attracted by his sister-in-law. He shared the screen with Simran as his leading lady. Ajith Kumar`s brilliant histrionic skill fetched him the
Filmfare Award for Best Actor. In 2000 Ajith performed with Mammooty, Abbas, Tabu and Aishwarya Rai in Kandukondain Kandukondain. Mugavari followed in 2001 with Ajith and Jyothika as the lead pair. Ajith Kumar has by now established himself as one of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema.
It was 2001 that Ajith got the opportunity to appear in Asoka. Although the film failed miserably but Ajith Kumar was appreciated for the anti-hero of the emperor`s brother. Returning to Tamil films he started the year with a major hit, Dheena directed by A.R. Murugadas. This movie depicted Ajith as an unruly youth. The star cast of the film also included Suresh Gopi and Laila. Several movies followed including Citizen with Vasundhara Das and then Red, a movie in the
action genre. Ajith Kumar won two the Filmfare Best Actor Awards once again for Citizen. In this film he appeared in 9 different roles. Poovellam Un Vasam and Raja opposite Jyothika followed. in 2002 the film, Villain, once again helped him to bag the Filmfare Award. In the following years Ajith appeared in Anjaneya, Jana and Attagasam opposite Meera Jasmine, Sneha, and Pooja respectively. These films did not do well at the box office. Ajith Kumar then went onto star in Varalaru, directed by K. S. Ravikumar, where he played triple roles. The film was one of the top grosser of the year. Ajith Kumar was back with a bang.
In 2007 Ajith kumar appeared in Aalwar but the film did not fare well at the box office. Kireedam opposite Trisha Krishnan gave him back his stature as the popular Tamil actor. Ajith Kumar was highly praised for his sensitive portrayal in the film. The film was produced by the Adlabs Films. But the much-awaited film of 2007 was the magnum opus, Billa. The film enjoyed a huge release throughout the world. It was also the first Tamil film to be released with English sub titles. The film was a remake of
Rajnikanth starrer 1980 Tamil film Billa. The film was directed by Vishnuvardhan and Ajith Kumar acted opposite Nayanthara, Namitha and Rose Dawn. The film was a runaway hit. Several films are currently in the pipeline for Ajith Kumar
