 Diamond, GemstoneDiamonds are usually the most attractive to the eyes. These are often famous for its play of colours. It emits very delicate bluish, reddish, or a mixture of blue and red radiance of glittering lustre when exposed to light.

Diamond derives its name from the Greek word adamas, which means `invincible`. The gem is luminous and dazzling, and emits sparks of light. A fine diamond is refulgent, radiant, and delightful. It is as soothing to the eyes as the Moon. It is very lovely and magnificent and has the self-luminous quality of a clear crystal. It is brilliant and radiates rainbows of light all around. Ancient Hindu scriptures mention eight types of diamonds. The names can be mentioned as Hanspati, Kamlapati, Vasanti, Vajraneel, Vanaspati, Sbyamvajra, Telia, and Sanloyi.

Venus is the planet of beauty, love, arts, romance, harmony and knowledge. Apart from these very qualities, presence of Venus in our horoscope signifies luxuries and marital happiness. Diamonds are said to be of the first water when very transparent and of the second or third water as transparency decreases. Diamond stones are weighed in carats and in points. Diamond is the birthstone of Aries or Ram. The time ranges from March 21 to April 19. This gemstone is the anniversary gemstone for the 30th and 60th year of marriage.

Diamond is the hardest known material found on earth and the most precious of all stones. Diamond has hardness of 10 on Mohs` scale, so it can be cut or polished only by another diamond. It is the ultimate gemstone, having few weaknesses and much strength. Despite its extreme hardness, diamond is brittle and at 4,289 degree Celsius, a diamond will completely burn up leaving nothing behind. It brings beauty, wealth, and prosperity to the person wearing it. The person is also blessed with peace, physical beauty as well as harmony in marriage or relationships. It enhances the intuitive self of the person and activates third eye or pineal gland. Diamond is set in gold metal. Venus also transmits its cosmic energy through other stones like quartz crystals, zircons, goshenites, white topaz, white sapphires, and other colourless gemstones with clear transparency. Various subtle hues such as pink, yellow and blue tints are suitable for different types of professions and social positions, as long as the gem is void of solid colour.

Colour of Diamond
Diamonds are usually colourless. However, brown, yellow, green, blue, purple, pink, red, grey and black variations are also found depending on the impurities present in that gemstone.

Diamonds should be stored separately. They can scratch other jewelry as well as each other. Diamonds from Indian deposits were known in ancient times. The diamond was thought to give its wearer strength in battle and to protect him against ghosts and magic. The first riverbed diamonds were probably discovered around 800 B.C. large demand provided an incentive for the production of false diamonds as early as 1675 in Paris. It can be said that only 20 per cent of diamonds are suitable for cutting as gems. The rest are discoloured or contain flaws. Because of their extreme hardness, diamonds have a number of important industrial applications. They are used in drill bits, glasscutters, masonry saws for shaping building stone, and for cutting other diamonds.

Diamonds are special gifts due to their glamour, rarity, durability and beauty. Diamonds are welcome gifts for all occasions. They are beautiful symbols of love around the world.

A diamond with proper proportions will send all light entering the diamond out of the top of the stone. May be this is the best gift to a woman from her desired man. But if someone wants a nice diamond, he or she should also be prepared to pay a nice price. In case of diamonds, low price means low quality.

There are numerous imitations of diamonds present in the market. The varieties can be mentioned as cubic zirconia, synthetic moissianite, synthetic rutile, strontium titanate, colorless topaz, colorless sapphire, and many others. Scratching glass is useless test as because many imitations that are made of quartz can also scratches glass. A professional or independent retail jeweler can give the idea of a real diamond.

Healing ability of Diamond
Diamond is a great assistance for all brain diseases. It is beneficial in stomach area. Diamonds strengthen the owner`s memory. Diamonds give faith, purity, life, joy, innocence and repentance. They assist in developing concentration and in being straight-forward and honest. It is believed the diamond loses its brilliance with the health of the wearer, regaining it only when the owner recovers. Diamond is an antidote to poison and is capable of detecting poison by exhibiting a moisture or perspiration on its surface. Supposedly, the higher quality the diamond, the better it supports these qualities.

Qualities of Diamond
There are some flaws in a diamond that can be mentioned as dullness, feathers of a crow, greasy, red spots, black spots, brittleness, pale or brown in color, ridges on the surface. On the other hand, the qualities of a good diamond can be mentioned as hardness and luster, pleasant appearance, and transparence and luminosity. There are some tests for identification of real diamond. As for example, a real diamond when placed in warm milk cools the milk. The way of determining a good quality diamond is that a real diamond when placed in liquid butter or ghee at room temperature solidifies the butter or ghee.

Diamond should be cleaned periodically by soaking it in a solution of warm water and liquid soap. A simple brush may be used to dislodge built up dirt from the surface of the diamond. The diamond and dirt should always be rinsed off with a non-abrasive cloth.

How to use Diamond
The weight of the gemstone should not be less than one Ratti i.e. 121 miligrams. Diamond should be studded in ring consisting 18 carat or 60 % gold. Diamond should be embedded in a gold, silver or punchdhatu i.e. a mixture of five metals, namely iron, silver, copper, gold, and zinc. It should be worn after washing the stone with water and unboiled milk and chanting Mantra `Om Shum Shukraye Namah Om`, it should be worn in the middle finger of the right hand. The wearer should donate white cloth, rice ground sugar and money to a Brahmin. Elephant, white cow or white horse should be fed with fruits. It should be worn on Friday. The best time to wear a diamond is between sunrise and 11:00 A.M.
