Cause of karmic bondage, Jain Philosophy
In Jaina philosophy, false belief, worldly pleasures, passion and activity are said to be causes behind the karmic bond.

As per Jaina Philosophy, there are various reasons given for the cause of karmic bondage. The bondage is getting one of various substances by uniting. Thus, the synthesis of the living being and the karma is said to be bondage. Fine particles of matter are received by a living being through its disposition. The blend of the particles of matter received and the space points of the living being is also known as karmic bondage.

According to the words of Acharya Abhayadevasuri, "The bond of fetters is physical bondage and the bond of karma is physical bondage". Again, Nemichandra Siddhanta Chakravrati says, "The conscious result by which karma is bonded is psychical bondage and the fusion of karma and the space points of the soul, their getting accommodating one and the same region is physical bondage".

One thing to be discussed here is how a living being gets bonds to karma. In this connection Lord Mahavira answered when Gautama Swami asked, "Gautama, the intense rise of knowledge obscuring karma gives rise to intuition obscuring karma. The intense rise of intuition obscuring karma gives rise to faith deluding karma. The intense rise of faith deluding karma gives rise to false belief. The rise of false belief causes eight kinds of karmic bondage. Passion is the cause of the karmic bondage."

These passions are again of two types:
  • Attachment and
  • Aversion.

  • If it is discussed further, four types of passion can be found. These are:
  • Anger
  • Pride
  • Deceit
  • Greed

  • The attachment leads to deceit and greed and aversion leads to anger and pride.

This karmic bondage has a particular process. The soul has infinite energy known as dormant energy. This energy acts as the capacity of the soul in its purest form. In the external world, it is not used. Body acts as the medium of the connection between the soul and the external world. It is an organized accumulation of the atoms of substances. Energy or vitality is the capacity that is caused by the combination of the soul and the body. It exists always in a living being having body. A type of emotional or practical vibrations is caused in a living being by consciousness.

This vibration exists in the unconscious things also but that is natural and not caused consciously.

The motivating force of karmic bondage in a conscious being is the obscure consciousness. The vibration caused by the practical force in the body combines the soul and karmic particles. This process is called influx. The matter particles in the body fit for karma combines with the soul and get changed in karma. This process is known as karmic bondage.

Karmic bondage is caused by the Influx. The influx is the mental, physical and vocal tendencies or activities of a living being.

Acharya Kundakunda said that there are four kinds of influx:
  • False belief
  • Worldly pleasures
  • Passion
  • Activity

  • These are accepted in Jaina philosophy to be the reason behind the karmic bondage.
