The 2001 census the demography of
Rajasthan states that the population of Rajasthan stands at 5.6 crore. The ratio of rural and urban population is 77:23. The census also states that the density of the population is 165 persons per square km. However this figure varies form place to place. As
Rajasthan is also a desert region these are sparsely populated that the rest of the state. In the desert regions it is 84 persons per sq. kilometer while in others the figure shoots up to 203 persons per sq. kilometer. The growth in population in Rajasthan has been phenomenal. It has grown at rate of 28.33% whereas the national average stands at 21.34%.
The female literacy rate is 43.9% according to the 2001 census. Rajasthan literally means the land of the rajas and maharajas. Primarily it was the Rajputs who ruled the land. The present day Rajasthan is also the dwelling place for Muslims and several tribal communities. Hence the diverse population has also led to the usage of several local dialects with
regional variations.
The predominant language, however, is that of the Marwaris.
Hindi, the official language of Rajasthan, is also spoken by the majority.
English is widely spoken by people engaged in the hospitality industry and business. Hence tourists will not face any problems while touring Rajasthan.
