Music has always played a significant role in Devika Chawla`s life. She started to sing at a very early age. She frequently sang in her high school (Modern School, Barakhamba Road, New Delhi). She used both the popular and classical styles to arrest the attention of her audience. She is equally well versed in Hindustani Classical music. She received training under the supervision of great teachers including Mr. Chandra Rao (student of famous violinist Dr. N. Rajam). She at present trains under as the student of Ustad Shafqat Ali Khan & Ustad Sukhawat Ali Khan (sons of renowned Ustad Salamat Ali Khan).
Devika Chawla experimented at the time of her undergraduate study in Georgetown University, Washington DC, with a fusion of Indian classical music and electronic music. With Holmes Ives (an electronic music creator and producer) she formed a team to build the album titled `Satyriasis`, the track of which was remixed many a times. Chawla`s solo self-titled debut album bagged the honour of being a unique collaboration amongst artists from three countries - India, Pakistan and the US. Shahi (Shehzad Hasan) - a music director and producer composed the musical score for the album. He has composed songs earlier with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan for `Mann Ki Lagan` & `Laal` (from the movie Paap). He was also one of the members of Pakistan`s first ever pop band - Vital Signs. The additional compositions have been composed by Anshuman Chandra (upcoming composer who composed music for the movie `French Fries and Curry`), and Noor Lodhi & Manesh Judge (music producers of international award winning music for the movie `Maya`).
The theme of her debut album was `love` and each & every song elucidates love through a new implication. A range of styles has been spanning through her songs, which include lounge, Punjabi, club, film and easy-listening. The main aim of the album was to manifest the versatility of her vocal performance. The end product was such that, every listener can find something to connect with.
