The South Gujarat University is located in the city of Surat in the state of Gujarat. In 2004, the University was renamed as the Veer Narmad South Gujarat University. It was named after the famous scholar and poet of Gujarat, Narmad.

The University offers postgraduate courses in various disciplines. Besides traditional subjects like Chemistry, Sociology, Statistics, English, Mathematics, Physics it offers courses in non-traditional subjects like public administration, rural studies, comparative literature and aquatic-biology. One of the most recognized departments of the University is the Master of Computer Application.
