
Sharmila Sharma was born in Jaipur to a family of artists. She was born to a folk musician cum singer father and a Kathak cum folk dancer mother. At the tender age of three, she experienced her first stage performances that eventually coincided with the first dance contest of her. Through her performances she managed to capture the attention of the audiences and fetched the first prize in the contest.
Sharmila Sharma was admitted to the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi after possessing an introductory training period in folk dances of Northern India and Kathak dances from her able mother cum teacher, Tara Sharma. At the Kathak Kendra she also acquired training in Hindusthani classical singing and tabla. Sharmila Sharma`s talent in the Jaipur Style of Kathak dance under the expert tutelage of Pandit Rajendra Kumar Gangani got that definite shape. Later on her talent was ornamented in the Lucknow style under the guidance of Pandit Birju Maharaj. At the tender age of fourteen years, Sharmila Sharma started performing in the international and national festivals and thus she emerged as a professional dancer.

Finally in the year 1993, Sharmila Sharma gradually settled down in Paris. At the Centre Mandapa in Paris, she started imparting guidance in Kathak dance and till today she continues to do so. Many workshops on Kathak and Kathak recitals were being conducted by her on a consistent basis. She can be regarded as a tireless dancer who travels and carries out performances to make Kathak dance to stand out with grace. Expert authorities and also the general audiences have appreciated her performances in both Europe and India.
Kathak has been regarded as a stringent Indian classical Dance form, which involves a lot of bravura. Keeping the entire range of skills of Kathak dance in mind, Sharmila Sharma unremittingly tries to modify and incorporate the new avenues to develop the traditional old form of Kathak dance. With creative thinking, brilliance and finespun feeling, Sharmila Sharma is continuously striving towards the perfection. On her own word: "I like to paint new pictures and sculpt new figures in space with my dance".
Dance for Sharmila Sharma has become her "life partner" as she cannot think of herself without dance. To her, dance became the `essence of her existence. During the year 1983 and 1993, Sharmila Sharma with Pandit Birju Maharaj`s Company toured in various parts of India and performed. Later on Sharmila Sharma performed mainly in Europe and

Asia.
