Sharmila Sharma, a Kathak Dancer fully utilized her talent by contributing in the field of Indian Classical dance.

Sharmila SharmaSharmila Sharma was born in Jaipur to a family of artists. She was born to a folk musician cum singer father and a Kathak cum folk dancer mother. At the tender age of three, she experienced her first stage performances that eventually coincided with the first dance contest of her. Through her performances she managed to capture the attention of the audiences and fetched the first prize in the contest.

Sharmila Sharma was admitted to the Kathak Kendra, New Delhi after possessing an introductory training period in folk dances of Northern India and Kathak dances from her able mother cum teacher, Tara Sharma. At the Kathak Kendra she also acquired training in Hindusthani classical singing and tabla. Sharmila Sharma`s talent in the Jaipur Style of Kathak dance under the expert tutelage of Pandit Rajendra Kumar Gangani got that definite shape. Later on her talent was ornamented in the Lucknow style under the guidance of Pandit Birju Maharaj. At the tender age of fourteen years, Sharmila Sharma started performing in the international and national festivals and thus she emerged as a professional dancer.

Sharmila SharmaFinally in the year 1993, Sharmila Sharma gradually settled down in Paris. At the Centre Mandapa in Paris, she started imparting guidance in Kathak dance and till today she continues to do so. Many workshops on Kathak and Kathak recitals were being conducted by her on a consistent basis. She can be regarded as a tireless dancer who travels and carries out performances to make Kathak dance to stand out with grace. Expert authorities and also the general audiences have appreciated her performances in both Europe and India.

Kathak has been regarded as a stringent Indian classical Dance form, which involves a lot of bravura. Keeping the entire range of skills of Kathak dance in mind, Sharmila Sharma unremittingly tries to modify and incorporate the new avenues to develop the traditional old form of Kathak dance. With creative thinking, brilliance and finespun feeling, Sharmila Sharma is continuously striving towards the perfection. On her own word: "I like to paint new pictures and sculpt new figures in space with my dance".

Dance for Sharmila Sharma has become her "life partner" as she cannot think of herself without dance. To her, dance became the `essence of her existence. During the year 1983 and 1993, Sharmila Sharma with Pandit Birju Maharaj`s Company toured in various parts of India and performed. Later on Sharmila Sharma performed mainly in Europe and Sharmila SharmaAsia. Some of the noteworthy performances by her are: From the year 1990 to 1993 --- Reoma World Kagawa Festival (Osaka, Japan) and tour in Japan, India Festival (Bangkok, Thailand), India Festival (Saint-Denis, Reunion Island), 5 month European tour (Germany, Austria, Switzerland); from the year 1994 to 1996 --- Mandapa Cultural Center (Paris, France), Cité de la Musique (Paris, France), Space Mountain Opening, Disneyland Paris (Paris, France), Five Continents Festival : 1 million persons attended the show (Tirana, Albania), October Festival Normandie: Kathak - Flamenco show (DIVA-DCM, Rouen France); during 1996-2001 --- World Music and Dance Festival (Ris Orangis, France); In the year 1997 --- Queen Elizabeth Hall (London, United Kingdom), Water Festival (Stockholm, Sweden), European tour for a Kathak-Flamenco creation : France, Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Sweden, Norway, Finland, Denmark; from 1999- 2005 --- Choregraphies and performance in movies "Un Indien dans la ville" and "Film et Lumière", Bharat Bhavan Center (Bhopal, India), Action for Calcutta leproseus children, in presence of Mr Dominique Lapierre (Switzerland), Dance Festival (Guadeloupe, French Island), Cannes International Film Festival, 1999; Hermès tour (Germany, France), Dance Festival : Kathak - Flamenco - Oriental dancing fusion (Germany), Kathak tour with her master Sharmila SharmaPandit Rajendra Kumar Gangani in France (Paris, Nice, Saint Raphael, Clermont-Ferrand...); Dance Festival (Stockholm, Sweden), Cité de la Musique (Paris, France), French tour with her master Pandit Rajendra Kumar Gangani : Guimet Museum (Paris), Leurenn Glenmor stage (Carhaix), Bordeaux; Spring Arts Festival (Monaco).

Some of her recent performances are: Asiatic Arts Museum (Nice, France); Kathak workshop, directed for "Ateliers d`Ethnomusicologie" (Geneva, Switzerland); Germany tour, with a new "Kathak-Flamenco-Oriental dancing" creation; Kathak Workshops, Quai Branly Museum (Paris); Lille 300 Festival : Choregraphy of the opening Ceremony, in association with the Montalvo-Hervieu Company; Shared performance with L. Subramaniam, during the Lille 3000 Festival; Espal stage (Le Mans, France), as part of the " Dialogues between songs and rythms " creation by Keyvan Chemirani. Event organised by "Accords Croisés"; Qawwali Flamenco creation, with Faiz Ali Faiz (Pakistan), Duquende and Chicuelo (Spain), as part of the first Amsterdam Flamenco Biennale. Event organised by "Accords Croisés"; Fenetrange Festival; Basel Cultural Museum (Switzerland); "Kathak-Flamenco-Oriental Dancing" Creation, Munich (Germany); Athens Festival; "The Golden Age of Gupta Art", Grand Palais (Paris); Incredible India" Festival, Jardin d`Acclimatation (Paris); International Book Fair, Opening Press Conference, Radio France (Paris); Initiation Workshop, From January untill june 2007, Quai Branly Museum (Paris);Casino of Bern (Switzerland).
