S. Raman, the Indian tennis player, hails from Tamil Nadu. He clinched his maiden National Championship in Goa in 1993. The 1995 SAF Games at Chennai proved to be a highpoint in Raman`s career. In this match Raman brought fame to India by winning the team gold. Raman owned a gold in the singles event, silver in the doubles and another silver in the mixed doubles in this tour. The fame of being the Arjuna Awardee also happened in this year.
Being a contemporary of Kamlesh Mehta and Chetan Baboor, S. Raman is one of the few Indian table tennis players who have excelled at the international stage. S. Raman was rewarded with Arjuna Award. He was employed in the Indian Oil Corporation.
S. Raman was considered to be the most fitness conscious person and was reputed to be one of the fittest players in the national circuit.
S. Raman took part in national as well as the international circuits and earned equal fame in both the sectors in tennis. In 1997 Raman teamed up with paisano Chetan Baboor bagged the doubles gold in the Commonwealth table tennis meet at Glasgow. He won the doubles gold again at the 1999 Commonwealth Championships. In the same year, he focused on National Championship and earned the title in Lucknow. S. Raman won the doubles gold in the Commonwealth Championship twice in 1997 and 1999.
