The 27 teams that played against each other in the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 were the regular participants of the tournament for the previous several editions and they were coming from different parts of India. The organisers of the tournament, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) divided the teams into two different groups, Elite and Plate, depending on their performance in the previous editions of the tournament. The top 15 teams that performed extremely well in the Ranji Trophy, 2006-07 were put into the Elite Group of the tournament. The BCCI divided the 15 teams into two sub-groups namely Elite Group A and Elite Group B and the A and B sub-groups consisted 8 and 7 teams, respectively. The rest of the 12 teams were put into the Plate Group of the tournament by BCCI and they were also equally divided into two similar sub-groups.
The teams first participated in the sub-group matches and after being promoted to the knock out level of their groups, they played with different aims. The Plate Group teams played with the aim of becoming one of the top two teams in the group so that they could be promoted to the Elite Group for the next year`s edition. The Elite Group teams played in the knock out level with the view of winning the championship title of the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08. The participating teams in the tournament included the likes of Andhra, Assam, Baroda, Bengal, Delhi, Goa, Gujarat, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Hyderabad, Jammu & Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Mumbai, Orissa, Punjab, Railways, Rajasthan, Saurashtra, Services, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh and the Vidarbha.
Plate Group A Matches: The Plate Group A of the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 saw the participation of 6 teams that were coming from different parts of India. The teams were mainly representing different Indian states in the most prestigious domestic cricket tournament of India and they included the likes of Gujarat, Assam, Tripura, Services, Vidarbha and Kerala. The teams were put into the Plate Group A, as they performed poorly in the previous edition of the tournament. The teams competed with each other in the group matches for becoming one of the top two teams in the group. The teams also tried their best to secure a berth in the knock out level of the Plate Group; however, only the teams like Gujarat and Kerala eventually did so from the Plate Group A. The teams earned the highest points from the group matches to get the chance and the vied for one of the top two spots in the Plate Group. They did so for being promoted to the Elite Group in the next year`s edition.
Plate Group B Matches: The Plate Group B in the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 consisted 6 teams that were put into the group for their poor performances in the previous editions of tournament. The BCCI put the teams into the group and the most of the teams were representing various Indian states in the most popular and premium domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams that played in the Plate Group B included the likes of Goa, Haryana, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Railways and Jammu & Kashmir. All the teams gave their best efforts to claim one of the top two spots in the group and they also tried hard to secure a berth in the knock out level of the Plate Group. The teams like Madhya Pradesh and Railways eventually became successful to do so from the Plate Group B, as they earned the highest points from the group matches.
Elite Group A Matches: All the 8 teams that participated in the Elite Group A of Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 were the top performers of the previous edition of the tournament. The teams were selected by the BCCI to play in the Elite Group A and they were not representing any specific region of India. The teams were mainly representing different Indian states in the most popular and prestigious domestic cricket tournament of India. The participating teams included the likes of Himachal Pradesh, Saurashtra, Mumbai, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, Delhi and Rajasthan. All the teams played in the group matches with the same view of becoming one of the top two teams in the group and they also tried their best to get into the knock out level of the Elite Group. The teams like Delhi and Saurashtra eventually got into the knock out level from the Elite Group A by earning the highest points from the group matches.
Elite Group B Matches: 7 teams played against each other in the Elite Group B of the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 and the BCCI put the teams into the group, on the basis of their performance in the previous edition. The teams were not coming from any particular region and they actually represented various Indian states in the premium domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Orissa, Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Andhra, Bengal, Hyderabad and Baroda and they competed with each other very hard for claiming one of the top spots in the group. Securing a berth in the knock out level of the Elite Group was also another principal objective of all the teams. However, only the teams like Baroda and Uttar Pradesh eventually became successful to do so from the Elite Group B, as they earned the highest points from the group matches.
Knock out Matches: The knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 2007-08 saw the participation of the top 8 teams that were coming from the four sub-groups of the Elite and Plate Groups. The top two teams from each of the sub-groups got the permission of the BCCI to play in the knock out level of their respective groups. The BCCI selected the teams on the basis of the points they earned from their respective group matches and the teams included the likes of Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Kerala, Railways, Baroda, Delhi, Saurashtra and Uttar Pradesh. The first four teams were from the Plate Group and they played against each other in the Plate Group knock out level for becoming one of the top two teams in the group. The teams tried so, as the top champion and runners-up teams of the Plate Group were promoted to the Elite Group of the next year`s edition. On the other hand, the Elite Group teams played in the Elite Group knock out level with the aim of winning the eventual championship title.
