The Elite Group A of the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 saw the participation of the top most 8 teams in the tournament and the BCCI selected the teams according to their performance in the previous edition. All the teams performed very well in the previous edition of the tournament and they were not coming from any specific region of the country. The teams included the likes of Delhi, Mumbai, Maharashtra, Bengal, Railways, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Gujarat and all of them tried their best to claim one of the top two spots in the group. Securing a berth in the knock out level of the Elite Group was also another principal aim of the teams. However, only the teams like Bengal and Mumbai eventually became successful to do so from the Elite Group A. After earning the highest points from the group matches, the two teams went on to compete with the top teams of the Elite Group B in the knock out matches. The main aim of the teams was to clinch the prestigious championship title of the tournament.

The Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 started with the match between the teams of Delhi and Mumbai and the match was held at Delhi from 23-26 November, 2005. The drawn match saw the Mumbai team earning 2 points and the Delhi team remaining pointless in it. The teams of Maharashtra and Bengal played against each other in the second match of the group and the two teams played the match at Pune from 23-26 November, 2005. The Bengal team earned 2 points from the drawn match and the Maharashtra team failed to earn any points. The next match of the group involved the teams like Railways and Karnataka and the match took place at Delhi from 23-26 November, 2005. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Karnataka team 2 points for the match. However, the Railways team could not earn even a single point from the match. The teams of Tamil Nadu and Gujarat were involved in the next match of the group and the match was held at Thirunelvelli from 23-26 November, 2005. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Tamil Nadu team earned 2 points from it. The Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match.

The Delhi and Bengal teams met with each other in the fifth of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 01-04 December, 2005. The Bengal team played extremely well in the match and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 5 points. The Delhi team failed to earn even a single point from the match. The next match of the group involved the teams like Gujarat and Maharashtra and the match was held at Valsad from 01-04 December, 2005. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Gujarat team 2 points for the match. The Maharashtra team remained pointless in the match. Then, the teams of Karnataka and Mumbai appeared in the next match of the group and the match took place at Bangalore from 01-04 December, 2005. The drawn match saw the Mumbai team earning 2 points from it and it also saw the Karnataka team remaining pointless. The match between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Railways was also held during the same timing from 01-04 December, 2005 and the two teams played the match at Delhi. The Tamil Nadu team earned 2 points from the drawn match and the Railways team failed to earn any points.

The match between the teams of Delhi and Maharashtra was the ninth of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the match was held at Delhi from 09-12 December, 2005. The drawn match saw the Delhi team earning 2 points and the Maharashtra team remaining pointless in it. The next match of the group involved the teams like Mumbai and Bengal, and the teams played the match at Mumbai from 09-12 December, 2005. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Mumbai team earned 32 points from it. The Bengal team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group involved the teams like Railways and Gujarat and the match took place at Delhi from 09-12 December, 2005. The Railways team clinched a victory of 193 ruins in the match for earning 4 points and the Gujarat team remained pointless in the match. The Tamil Nadu team played against the Karnataka team in the next match of the Elite Group A and the two teams played the match at Chennai from 09-12 December, 2005. The Gujarat team won the closely contested match with a narrow margin of only 2 wickets for earning 4 points and the Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. The Karnataka team played against the Bengal team in the next match of the group and the match was held at Mysore from 17-20 December, 2005. The Bengal team earned 2 points from the drawn match and the Karnataka team remained pointless. The next match of the group saw the teams of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu playing against each other at Nasik from 17-20 December, 2005. The match was won by the Maharashtra team with a huge margin of 9 wickets and the team also earned 4 points from the match. The match between the teams of Mumbai and Railways was the next in the Elite Group A and the match was held at Mumbai from 17-20 December, 2005. The Gujarat and Bengal teams played against each other in the 17th of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the match took place at Surat from 25-28 December, 2005. Both the teams of Gujarat and Bengal earned 1 point, each from the drawn match. The Karnataka team then met with the Maharashtra team in the next match of the group and the match was held at Bangalore from 25-28 December, 2005. Clinching a huge victory of an innings and 8 runs, the Karnataka team earned 5 points from the match, while the Maharashtra team remained pointless. The teams of Mumbai and Tamil Nadu were involved in the next match of the Elite Group A and the two teams played the match at Mumbai from 25-28 December, 2005. The Mumbai team won the match by a huge margin of 9 wickets for earning 5 points and the Tamil Nadu team failed to earn any points from the match. Then, the Railways and Delhi teams met with each other in the next match of the group and the match was held at Delhi from 25-28 December, 2005. The winner of the match was the Delhi team with a margin of 7 wickets and the team also earned 4 points from the match. However, the Railways team could not earn even a single point from the match.

The 21st of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 was played between the teams of Bengal and Tamil Nadu and the two teams played the match at Kolkata from 03-06 January, 2006. The Tamil Nadu team clinched a huge victory of 222 runs in the match for earning 4 points and the Bengal team remained pointless in it. The next match of the group involved the teams like Gujarat and Mumbai and the match was held at Ahmedabad from 03-06 January, 2006. The match was won by the Mumbai team with a margin of 8 wickets and the team also earned 4 points from the match. However, the Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. Then, the Karnataka team played against the Delhi team in the next match of the group and the match took place at Bangalore from 03-06 January, 2006. The match saw the Karnataka team winning by a margin of 167 runs to earn 4 points and it also saw the Delhi team failing to earn any points from it. The match between the teams of Railways and Maharashtra was the next match of the Elite Group A and the match was held at Delhi from 03-06 January, 2006. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Maharashtra team 2 points for the match. The Railways team remained pointless in the match.

The teams of Bengal and Railways were involved in the 25th of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the match was held at Kolkata from 10-13 January, 2006. The Bengal team earned 4 points from the match by clinching a victory of 5 wickets and the Railways team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group involved the teams like Gujarat and Karnataka and the match took place at Ahmedabad from 10-13 January, 2006. The Gujarat team played well in the match and clinched a victory of 4 wickets for earning 4 points from it. However, the Karnataka team remained pointless in the match. Then, the teams of Mumbai and Maharashtra met with each other in the next match of the group and the match was held at Mumbai from 10-13 January, 2006. The winner of the match was the Maharashtra team with a margin of 65 runs and the team also earned 4 points from the match. The Mumbai team could not earn even a single point from the match. The last of the Elite Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 was played between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Delhi and the two teams played the match at Chennai from 10-13 January, 2006. The drawn match saw the Tamil Nadu team earning 2 points from it and it also saw the Delhi team failing to earn any points.
