6 teams played against each other under the Plate Group A in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the teams had no geographical uniformity, like the previous zonal system. The teams included the likes of Kerala, Goa, Services, Tripura, Vidarbha and Saurashtra and they played against each other in the Plate Group A matches for claiming the top two spots in the Group. The main reason behind the teams` this endeavour was that only the top two teams from each of the two Plate Groups, were allowed to play in the knock out matches of the Plate Group. Though, all the teams tried their best, only the teams like Kerala and Vidarbha eventually entered into the knock out level from the Plate Group A, by earning the highest points from the group matches.

The Kerala and Goa teams played against each other in the first of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the two teams played the match at Kochi from 12-15 November, 2002. The Kerala team won the match with a good margin of 158 runs for earning 2 points and the Goa team remained pointless in the match. The second match of the Plate Group A was played between the teams of Services and Tripura and the match was held at Delhi from 12-15 November, 2002. The Services team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The third match of the group saw the teams of Vidarbha and Saurashtra playing against each other at Nagpur from 12-15 November, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Saurashtra team earned 1 point from the match. The Vidarbha team could not earn any points from the match.

The teams of Saurashtra and Kerala met with each other in the fourth of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match took place at Rajkot from 19-21 November, 2002. The Kerala team became the winner of the match with a margin of an innings and 91 runs and earned 3 points from the match. The Saurashtra team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the group involved the teams like Vidarbha and Services and the match was held at Nagpur from 19-22 November, 2002. The Vidarbha team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Services team remained pointless in the match. The Goa team played against the Tripura team in the next match of the group and the match took place at Margao from 20-23 November, 2002. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Goa team earned 1 point from the match, while Tripura remained pointless.

The seventh of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 involved the teams like Kerala and Tripura and the two teams played the match at Kochi from 27-30 November, 2002. The Kerala team earned 3 points from the match by clinching a victory of an innings and 148 runs and the Tripura team failed to earn any points from the match. The Saurashtra and Services teams then played against each other in the next match of the group and the match was held at Rajkot from 27-30 November, 2002. The drawn match saw the Saurashtra team earning 1 point and it also saw the Services team remaining pointless. The teams of Vidarbha and Goa were involved in the next match of the group and the match took place at Nagpur from 27-30 November, 2002. The Vidarbha team clinched a huge victory of 203 runs in the match for earning 2 points and the Goa team failed to earn any points from the match.

The match between the teams of Saurashtra and Goa was the tenth of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 and the match was organised at Rajkot from 19-22 December, 2002. The winner of the match was the Goa team with a margin of 90 runs for earning 2 points and the Saurashtra team remained pointless in the match. The Services team then played against the Kerala team in the next match of the group, which took place at Delhi from 19-22 December, 2002. The Kerala team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Services team failed to earn any points from it. Then, the teams of Vidarbha and Tripura played against each other in the next match of the group and this match was also held during the same timing from 19-22 December, 2002, at Nagpur. The match was won by the Vidarbha team with a huge margin of an innings and 173 runs and to earn 3 points and the Tripura team remained pointless in the match.

The next match of the Plate Group A saw the teams of Saurashtra and Tripura playing against each other at Rajkot from 28-31 December, 2002. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded 1 point to the Saurashtra team. However, the Tripura team could not earn any points from the match. The Services and Goa teams were involved in the next match of the group and the match took place at Delhi from 28-31 December, 2002. The Goa team earned 1 point from the drawn match and the Services team remained pointless in it. The last of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2002-03 involved the teams of Vidarbha and Kerala and the two teams played the match at Nagpur from 28-31 December, 2002. The Kerala team earned 2 points from the match by clinching a victory of 8 wickets and the Vidarbha team failed to earn any points from the match.
