The South Zone in the Ranji Trophy 2001-02, saw the teams of Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad claiming the top spots.

There were 6 teams participated under the South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and all the regular teams were selected by the BCCI from the Southern region of India. Most of the teams were representing different states from the Southern region of India in the most popular and fruitful domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Hyderabad, Kerala, Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra and Karnataka. All the teams played against each other in the zonal level league matches with the same objective of claiming the top spot in the zone. The teams had the aim to secure a berth in the knock out level of the tournament also and only the teams like Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad eventually achieved the aim. The Andhra, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad teams earned total of 28, 26 and 24 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches. They also went on to compete with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level for the championship title.

The teams of Hyderabad and Karnataka played against each other in the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and the match was held at Secunderabad from 21-24 November, 2001. The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, which remained drawn during the specified period of time. The Tamil Nadu and Goa teams were involved in the second match of the zone and the match took place at Chennai from 24-27 November, 2001. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Tamil Nadu and Goa teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The third match of the South Zone saw the teams of Kerala and Andhra playing against each other at Cochin from 24-27 November, 2001. The drawn match saw the Andhra and Kerala teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.

The Kerala and Hyderabad teams met with each other in the fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and the two teams played the match at Cochin from 02-05 December, 2001. The winner of the match was the Hyderabad team with a margin of 144 runs and the team also earned 8 points from the match. The Kerala team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Karnataka and Tamil; Nadu and the match was held at Bangalore from 02-05 December, 2001. The Tamil Nadu team earned 8 points from the closely contested match by clinching a narrow victory of 4 wickets and the Karnataka team remained pointless. The match between the teams of Andhra and Goa was also held during the same timing from 02-05 December, 2001 and the match took place at Vijayawada. The Andhra team became the winner of the match with a margin of 7 wickets and earned 8 points from it. The Goa team could not earn even a single point from the match.

The match between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad was the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and the match was held at Chennai from 10-13 December, 2001. The Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Goa and Kerala teams appeared in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Panaji from 10-13 December, 2001. The Goa team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of 8 wickets for earning 8 points from it. The Kerala team remained pointless in the match. The Andhra team then played against the Karnataka team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Kurnool from 10-13 December, 2001. The drawn match saw the Andhra and Karnataka teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.

The Karnataka and Kerala teams were involved in the tenth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and the match took place at Bangalore from 18-21 December, 2001. The Karnataka team clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets in the match for earning 8 points and the Kerala team failed to earn any points from the match. The next match of the zone was played between the teams of Goa and Hyderabad and the match was held at Panaji from 18-21 December, 2001. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Hyderabad and Goa teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The Andhra and Tamil Nadu teams then appeared in the next match of the South Zone, which took place at Vishakhapatnam from 18-21 December, 2001. The Andhra and Tamil Nadu teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The teams of Hyderabad and Andhra played against each other in the next match of the South Zone and the match was held at Secunderabad from 25-28 December, 2001. The Andhra and Hyderabad teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The Tamil Nadu and Kerala teams then met with each other in the next match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Chennai from 25-28 December, 2001. The drawn match saw the Tamil Nadu team earning 5 points and Kerala earning 3 points from it. The teams of Karnataka and Goa appeared in the last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2001-02 and the match was held at Bangalore from 25-28 December, 2001. The match saw the Karnataka team winning by a good margin of 8 wickets to earn 8 points and it also saw the Goa team remaining pointless.
