The West Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1998-99 saw the participation of 5 teams in it and all the teams were coming from the Western region of India. The teams were also the regular participants in the most prestigious domestic cricket tournament in India and they included the likes of Maharashtra, Gujarat, Saurashtra, Mumbai and Baroda. The zone saw all the teams trying hard to become one of the top three teams in the zone so that they could advance to the Super League stage of the tournament. However, the teams like Baroda, Saurashtra and Maharashtra eventually became the representatives of West Zone in the Super League stage. The Baroda, Saurashtra and Maharashtra teams earned total of 22, 18 and 17 points, respectively from the zonal level league matches for entering into the Super League stage.
The West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1998-99 started with the match between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 16-19 November, 1998. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Saurashtra and Baroda teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The teams of Maharashtra and Gujarat played against each other in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Pune from 16-19 November, 1998. The Maharashtra team played very well in the match for clinching a victory of an innings and 115 runs to earn 8 points and the Gujarat team failed to earn any points from the match. The third match of the West Zone was played between the teams of Mumbai and Gujarat and the match took place at Mumbai from 23-26 November, 1998. The Mumbai team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won this match with a margin of an innings and 27 runs to earn 8 points. The Gujarat team failed to earn any points from this match also.
The Saurashtra and Maharashtra teams were involved in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1998-99 and the match was organised at Rajkot from 23-26 November, 1998. The Saurashtra and Maharashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the match, as it remained drawn during the specified period of time. The Maharashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Baroda from 30 November-03 December, 1998. The match officials awarded both the Baroda and Maharashtra teams 3 points, each for the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Saurashtra and Mumbai and the two teams played the match at Rajkot from 30 November-03 December, 1998. Both the Saurashtra and Mumbai teams earned 3 points, each from the drawn match.
The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1998-99 was played between the teams of Mumbai and Baroda and the match was held at Mumbai from 28-31 December, 1998. The Baroda team played well in the closely contested match and clinched a narrow victory of 4 wickets to earn 8 points from the match. However, the Mumbai team remained pointless in the match. The Gujarat team then played against the Saurashtra team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Ahmedabad from 28-31 December, 1998. The match was a drawn one during the stipulated duration and the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Maharashtra and Mumbai teams met with each other in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Pune from 04-07 January, 1999. The Mumbai team earned 5 points and Maharashtra earned 3 points from the drawn match. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1998-99 saw the teams of Gujarat and Baroda playing against each other at Surat from 04-07 January, 1999. The Baroda team earned 8 points from the match by clinching a victory of 175 runs and the Gujarat team remained pointless in the match.
