The South Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 is one of the most popular domestic cricket tournaments in India. 6 teams, all coming from the Southern region of India participated in the match. All the teams had been playing in the tournament on a regular basis for the previous several editions and they included the likes of Goa, Kerala, Hyderabad, Karnataka, Andhra and Tamil Nadu. All the teams tried their best to become one of the top three teams in the zone and they also gave their best efforts for securing a birth in the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96. The zone saw the teams of Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad eventually becoming successful to get into the knock out level and competing with the top teams of the other zones for the championship title. The Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad teams earned total of 26, 16 and 12 points, respectively, at the end of the zonal level league matches.

The match between the teams of Andhra and Karnataka was the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the two teams played the match at Eluru from 10-13 December, 1995. The Karnataka team won the match by a margin of an innings and 109 runs for earning 6 points and the Andhra team failed to earn any points from the match. The teams of Goa and Kerala played against each other in the second match of the zone and the match was held at Panjim from 10-13 December, 1995. The drawn match saw the Goa team earning 2 points on the basis of its first innings lead and it also saw the Kerala team remaining pointless. The Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad teams played against each other in the third match of the zone and the match took place at Chennai from 11-14 December, 1995. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Hyderabad team earned 2 points from it for having a lead in the first innings. The Tamil Nadu team failed to earn any points from the match.

The Kerala team then played against the Hyderabad team in the fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the match was held at Trivandrum from 19-22 December, 1995. The Hyderabad team played very well in the match and clinched a victory of 125 runs for earning 6 points and the Kerala team could not earn any points from the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Andhra and Tamil Nadu and the two teams played the match at Vizianagaram from 19-22 December, 1995. The closely contested match saw the Tamil Nadu team clinching a victory with a narrow margin of only 2 wickets for earning 6 points. The Andhra team remained pointless in the match. The match between the teams of Karnataka and Goa was also held during the same timing from 19-22 December, 1995 and the match took place at Bangalore. The winner of the match was the Karnataka team with a very good margin of an innings and 237 runs and the team also earned 6 points from the match. The Goa team remained pointless in the match.

The seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 saw the teams of Kerala and Andhra playing against each other at Trivandrum from 07-10 January, 1996. The Kerala team earned 6 points from the match by clinching a victory of 8 wickets and the Andhra team remained pointless in the match. The Goa and Hyderabad teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Margao from 07-10 January, 1996. The winner of the match was the Hyderabad team with a good margin of an innings and 182 runs for earning 6 points and the Goa team failed to earn any points from the match. The Hyderabad team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Andhra team at Secunderabad from 16-19 January, 1996. The match saw the Andhra team winning by a margin of 9 wickets for earning 6 points and it also saw the Hyderabad team remaining pointless.

The Karnataka and Kerala teams played against each other in the tenth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 and the two teams played the match at Bangalore from 18-21 January, 1996. The match saw a close contest between the two teams and the Karnataka team eventually clinched a victory of only 3 wickets in the match for earning 6 points. The Kerala team could not earn any points from the match. The teams of Tamil Nadu and Goa were involved in the next match of the zone, which took place at Chennai from 18-21 January, 1996. The match was won by the Tamil Nadu team with a good margin of 8 wickets to earn 6 points and the Goa team failed to earn any points from the match. Then, the Tamil Nadu team played against the Kerala team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Thirunelvelli from 28-31 January, 1996. The Tamil Nadu team earned 6 points from the match by clinching a victory of an innings and 165 runs and the Kerala team remained pointless in the match.

The next match of the South Zone saw the teams of Hyderabad and Karnataka playing against each other at Secunderabad from 28-31 January, 1996. The Karnataka team became the winner of the match by a margin of 9 wickets and it also earned 6 points from the match. However, the Hyderabad team could not earn any points from the match. The match between the teams of Andhra and Goa was also held during the same timing from 28-31 January, 1996 and the two teams played the match at Kakinada. The Andhra team won the match by a margin of 79 runs to earn 6 points and the Goa team remained pointless in the match. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1995-96 involved the teams like Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the match took place at Bhadrawati from 04-07 February, 1996. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Karnataka team earned 2 points from the match for having a lead in the first innings. The Tamil Nadu team could not earn any points from the match.
