The North Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 that is considered as the most popular domestic cricket tournament in India comprised 6 teams. The teams were mainly coming from the Northern region of India and all of them had been playing in the tournament on a regular basis for the past several editions. The teams included the likes of Punjab, Jammu & Kashmir, Delhi, Haryana, Services and Himachal Pradesh and they played against each other for claiming the top spot in the zone. All the teams also tried their best for getting a chance for competing in the knock out level of the tournament. However, only the teams like Haryana and Delhi eventually became successful to do so from the zone, as they earned the highest points from the zonal level league matches. The Haryana and Delhi teams earned total of 97 and 90 points, respectively at the end of the zonal level league matches and they were also promoted to the knock out level of the tournament.
The North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 started with the match between the teams of Haryana and Services and the match was organised at Faridabad from 28-31 October, 1991. The Haryana team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won the match by a very good margin of an innings and 212 runs and also earned 24 points from it. The Services team could earn only 1 point from the match. The teams of Delhi and Services played against each other in the second match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Delhi from 02-05 November, 1991. The Delhi team earned 21 points from the match by clinching a victory by an innings and 147 runs and the Services team also earned 2 points from the match. The third match of the North Zone saw the Services team playing against the Himachal Pradesh team at Dharmasala from 15-18 November, 1991. The Services team played very well in the match and earned 16 points by winning it with a very good margin of 135 runs and the Himachal Pradesh team earned 8 points from the match, as well.
The Punjab and Jammu & Kashmir teams played against each other in the fourth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match took place at Ludhiana from 15-18 November, 1991. The winner of the match was the Punjab team with a very good margin of an innings and 106 runs and the team also earned 24 points from it. The Jammu & Kashmir team also earned 4 points from the match. The next match of the zone saw the Jammu & Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh teams playing against each other at Jammu from 20-23 November, 1991. The Jammu & Kashmir team played wonderfully in the match and earned 24 points by clinching a victory of an innings and 64 runs. The Himachal Pradesh team also earned 6 points from the match. The Punjab team then played against the Delhi team in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Amritsar from 21-24 November, 1991. The match was won by the Delhi team with a very good margin of an innings and 40 runs and the team earned 23 points from the match. The earnings of the Punjab team from the match were 5 points.
The match between the teams of Haryana and Jammu & Kashmir was the seventh of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the match was held at Bhiwani from 26-29 November, 1991. The match saw the Haryana team earning 24 points by clinching a victory of an innings and 119 runs and the Jammu & Kashmir team also earned 4 points from the match. The Punjab and Himachal Pradesh teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone, which took place at Amritsar from 26-29 November, 1991. The Punjab team earned 24 points from the match by winning it with a margin of an innings and 118 runs and the Himachal Pradesh team also earned 4 points from the match. The Punjab team appeared in the next match of the North Zone also and this time, it played against the Haryana team at Gurgaon from 01-04 December, 1991. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Haryana and Punjab teams 14 and 6 points respectively for the match.
The match between the teams of Himachal Pradesh and Delhi was also held during the same timing from 01-04 December, 1991 and the two teams played the match at Una. The match was the tenth of the North Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1991-92 and the Delhi team won the match by a margin of an innings and 163 runs. The Delhi and Haryana teams earned 23 and 3 points, respectively from the match. The Services and Jammu & Kashmir teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone, which was held at Delhi from 02-05 December, 1991.
