The teams were mainly representing different states from the Western region of India and they were also the regular participants of the tournament. The match between the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra was the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the match was played at Karad from 18-25 December, 1983. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 9 points and Maharashtra earning 8 points from it. The second match of the zone was played between the teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra and the match was held at Rajkot from 18-20 December 1983. Then match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the Saurashtra and Gujarat teams earned 14 and 11 points, respectively from the match. The Saurashtra team then played against the Maharashtra team in the third match of the zone and the two teams played the match at Nanded from 01-03 January 1984. The drawn match saw the Maharashtra team earning 6 points and Saurashtra earning 3 points from it.
The teams of Gujarat and Bombay played against each other in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The match was organised at Valsad from 03-05 January 1984 and the Bombay and Gujarat teams earned 11 and 10 points, respectively from the drawn match. The Bombay team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Bombay from 07-09 January 1984. The winner of the match was the Bombay team with a margin of 7 wickets and it earned 30 points from it. The Saurashtra team earned 9 points from the match, as well. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Baroda and Gujarat and the teams played the match at Ahmedabad from 07-09 January, 1984. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded both the Gujarat and Baroda teams 7 points, each for the match.
The clash between the teams of Bombay and Maharashtra took place in the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the match was held at Bombay from 23-25 January 1984. The match was won by the Bombay team with a margin of 8 wickets and the team earned 29 points from the match. The Maharashtra team also earned 9 points from the match. The Saurashtra team then clashed with the Baroda team in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Porbandar from 23-25 January, 1984. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 14 points and Saurashtra earning 10 points from it. The Gujarat and Maharashtra teams appeared in the next match of the zone and the match was held at Surat from 28-30 January 1984. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and Gujarat and Maharashtra earned 12 and 11 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Bombay and the two teams played the match at Baroda from 29-31 January, 1984. The Bombay team finished the zonal level league matches on a positive note by winning this match with a margin of 7 wickets. The Bombay team earned 30 points and Baroda team earned 12 points from the match, as well.
