After the completion of the league matches in all the five zones of the competition, the top two teams from every zone entered into the knock out level of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The ten teams that played against each other in the knock out matches of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 included the likes of Bengal, Delhi, Bombay, Orissa, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Hyderabad, Tamil Nadu and Baroda. The teams took part in the Pre-Quarter-Finals, Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals and Final match of the tournament and gave their best efforts to win the championship title. However, it was the Bombay team that regained the championship title, once again.
The first Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 was played between the teams of Delhi and Bengal at Delhi from 22-25 January, 1984. The Delhi team played very well in the tournament and clinched a victory of 8 wickets for advancing towards the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament. The teams of Orissa and Rajasthan played against each other in the second Pre-Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 and the match was held at Rourkela from 22-25 February, 1984. Though the match remained drawn during the stipulated duration of time, the match officials allowed the Rajasthan team to enter into the Quarter-Final stage of the tournament.
The match between the teams of Haryana and Hyderabad was the first Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The two teams played the match at Chandigarh from 03-06 March, 1984 and it saw the Haryana team winning by a margin of 158 runs to reach the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. The second Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 involved the teams like Rajasthan and Bombay and the match took place at Jaipur from 03-05 March, 1984. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Bombay team got the permission to enter into the Semi-Finals of the tournament. The clash between the teams of Baroda and Uttar Pradesh took place in the third Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The match was held at Baroda from 03-06 March, 1984 and the Baroda team played well in the match to clinch a victory of an innings and 44 runs for entering into the Semi-Final stage of the tournament. The last and fourth Quarter-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 was played between the teams of Tamil Nadu and Delhi at Madras from 03-06 march, 1984. The drawn match saw the Delhi team securing a birth in the Semi-Finals of the tournament.
The first Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 involved the teams like Bombay and Haryana and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 17-20 March, 1984. Both the teams played well in the match and as a result, it remained drawn during the stipulated duration. However, the Bombay team entered into the Final of the tournament from this drawn match. The Delhi and Baroda teams played against each other in the second Semi-Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84. The match took place at Delhi from 18-20 March, 1984 and it saw the Delhi team winning by a huge margin of 441 runs for setting up a clash with the Bombay team in the Final of the tournament. Thus, the Final match of the Ranji Trophy, 1983-84 witnessed the Delhi and Bombay teams locking their horns together at Bombay from 30 March-03 April, 1984. Though the match remained drawn during the specified period of time, the match officials declared the Bombay team as the winner of the match as well as the championship.
