The teams that played under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 included the likes of Saurashtra, Bombay, Maharashtra, Gujarat and Baroda. All the teams were coming from the Western region of India and they were representing various states in the Western India, in the tournament. There was a huge clash between the teams in the zonal level, as all of them were playing with the same aim of claiming the top spot in the zone and securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. The teams like Bombay and Baroda could eventually do so from the zone and they also clashed with the top teams of the other zone in the knock out level for the championship title.

The match between the teams of Saurashtra and Maharashtra was the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 and the match was held at Bhavanagar from 14-16 October, 1978. The Maharashtra team clinched a huge victory of 9 wickets in the match for earning 8 valuable points and also for getting a very god starts in the tournament. The second match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Gujarat and Baroda at Gandhi Nagar from 21-23 October, 1978. The match remained drawn during the stipulated period of time and it saw the Gujarat and Baroda teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams of Bombay and Baroda and the teams played the match at Bombay from 11-13 November, 1978. The Bombay and Baroda teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The teams of Gujarat and Saurashtra clashed with each other in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 and the match took place at Nadiad from 11-13 November, 1978. The Gujarat team played wonderfully in the match and earned 8 points from it, by clinching a huge victory of 10 wickets. The next match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Saurashtra and Bombay at Bhuj from 09-11 December, 1978. The match also remained drawn during the stipulated duration and it saw the Bombay and Saurashtra teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams then played against each other in the next match of the zone at Sholapur from 09-11 December, 1978. The drawn match saw the Gujarat and Maharashtra teams earning 5 and 3 points, respectively from it.

The seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 involved the teams like Bombay and Gujarat and the two teams played the match at Bombay from 23-25 December, 1978. Playing wonderfully in the match, the Bombay team clinched a huge victory of an innings and 48 runs and also earned 8 valuable points, from the match. The clash between the teams of Baroda and Maharashtra took place at Baroda in the next match of the zone from 23-25 December, 1978. The drawn match saw the Baroda team earning 5 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it. The Maharashtra team appeared in the next match of the zone also and this time, it played against the Bombay team at Ahmednagar from 19-21 January, 1979. The Bombay team played well in this match also and beat the Maharashtra team by a huge margin of an innings and 178 runs for earning the entire 9 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1978-79 saw a clash between the teams of Baroda and Saurashtra at Baroda from 20-22 January, 1979. The Baroda team finished the zonal level on a positive note, as it earned 8 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 31 runs.
