Ranji Trophy

The South Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 saw the participation of 5 teams, all the regular ones that had been playing in the competition for the previous few editions. All the teams were coming from the Southern region of India and the teams included the likes of Kerala, Hyderabad, Andhra, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. The teams fought hard with each other in the league matches and their main aim was to become one of the top two teams in the zone and also to secure a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. However, it was the teams like Karnataka and Hyderabad that eventually became successful to get into the knock out level from the South Zone.

The teams of Kerala and Hyderabad played the first of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 and the match was held at Trivandrum from 18-20 October, 1975. The Hyderabad team got a very good start in the tournament, as it won this match with a huge margin of 10 wickets and also earned the entire 9 points from it. The clash between the teams of Karnataka and Kerala took place in the second match of the zone and the match was played at Raichur from 25-26 October, 1975. The Karnataka team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 95 runs for earning the full 9 points from the match. The third match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Hyderabad and Andhra at Hyderabad from 25-27 October, 1975. The match remained drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Hyderabad and Andhra teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match.

The fourth of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 was played between the teams of Kerala and Andhra at Trivandrum from 01-03 November, 1975. None of the teams could win the match, as it was washed out due to heavy rain without even a single ball been bowled. The match officials awarded both the Kerala and Andhra teams 2 points each for the abandoned match. The next match of the zone involved the teams of Andhra and Tamil Nadu and the match was held at Vijayawada from 14-15 November, 1975. The Tamil Nadu team showed a wonderful performance in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 143 runs for earning 8 valuable points and also for getting a very good start in the tournament. The Tamil Nadu team appeared in the sixth match of the South Zone also and this time, it played against the Kerala team at Madras from 23-25 November, 1975. This match was also declared as abandoned by the match officials, as heavy rain did not allow the players to bowl even a single ball in the match. The Tamil Nadu and Kerala teams earned 2 points each from the match.

The Hyderabad and Karnataka teams then clashed with each other in the seventh of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 and the match took place at Hyderabad from 23-25 November, 1975. The drawn match saw the Karnataka team earning 5 points and Hyderabad earning 3 points from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams of Tamil Nadu and Hyderabad and the two teams played the match at Madras from 20-22 December, 1975. The match also remained drawn during the specified period of time and the match officials awarded the Hyderabad and Tamil Nadu teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone saw a clash between the teams of Andhra and Karnataka at Vishakhapatnam from 22-24 December, 1975. The Karnataka team played very well in the match and clinched a huge victory of 10 wickets for earning 8 valuable points from the match. The last of the South Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 was played between the teams of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu at Bangalore from 03-05 January, 1976. The Tamil Nadu and Karnataka teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
