The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 saw all the regular four teams of the zone participating and playing against each other and the teams included the likes of Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar. All the teams were representing the states located in the Eastern region of India and the teams fought with each other very hard for securing a birth in the knock out level of the tournament. According to the rules and regulations of the tournament, the teams could do so only by becoming one of the top two teams in the East Zone. The Bengal and Bihar teams did just that and became successful to get into the knock out level from the East Zone.
The East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 started with the match between the teams of Orissa and Bengal and the two teams played the match at Rourkela from 28-30 November, 1975. The Bengal team started the tournament on a very positive note, as it earned 8 valuable points from the match, by winning it with a huge margin of an innings and 87 runs. The second match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Bihar and Assam at Jamshedpur from 28-30 November, 1975. The Bihar team also got a very good start in the tournament by winning this match with a margin of an innings and 100 runs. The team also earned the entire 9 points from the match.
The clash between the teams of Orissa and Assam happened in the third of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1975-76 and the match took place at Sambalpur from 03-05 December 1975.
