The Bombay, Baroda, Gujarat, Maharashtra and Saurashtra were the five teams that participated under the West Zone in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74. The teams were representing the Western region of India in the tournament and they played against each other in the zonal level for getting a chance into the knock out level of the tournament. The main target of the teams were to become one of the top two teams in the zone, as only the top two teams from a zone were supposed to get a chance into the knock out level of the tournament. The teams of Bombay and Maharashtra became successful to do so from the West Zone and they competed with the top teams of the other zones in the knock out level, for the championship trophy.

The teams of Baroda and Gujarat played the first of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 and the match was held at Baroda from 10-12 November 1973. The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the Baroda and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from it. The next match of the zone involved the teams of Gujarat and Bombay and the two teams clashed with each other at Nadiad from 17-19 November 1973. As the match was a drawn one, the match officials awarded the Bombay and Gujarat teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The third match of the West Zone saw a clash between the teams of Maharashtra and Saurashtra at Jalgaon from 17-19 November 1973. The match saw the Maharashtra team playing very well and winning by a margin of an innings and 104 runs.

The Maharashtra team appeared in the fourth of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 also and this time, it played against the Baroda team at Poona from 24-26 November 1973. The match remained drawn during the stipulated period of time and the match officials awarded both the teams 3 points each for the match. The next match of the West Zone saw a clash between the teams of Bombay and Saurashtra at Bombay from 24-26 November, 1973. The Bombay team won the match by an innings and 198 runs and also earned 8 valuable points from it. Then the Gujarat and Maharashtra teams clashed with each other in the next match of the zone and the match took place at Bulsar from 15-17 December, 1973. The Maharashtra and Gujarat teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.

The match between the teams of Baroda and Bombay was the seventh of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 and the match was held at Baroda from 22-24 December, 1973. The Bombay team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 36 runs for earning 8 valuable points from it. The next match of the zone saw a battle between the teams of Saurashtra and Gujarat at Junagadh from 22-24 December, 1973, where the Gujarat team won by a margin of 4 wickets to earn the entire 9 points. The teams of Bombay and Maharashtra played against each other in the next match of the West Zone at Bombay from 28-30 December 1973 and the match remained drawn during the stipulated duration. The match saw the Bombay team earning 5 points and Maharashtra earning 3 points from it. The last of the West Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1973-74 involved the teams like Saurashtra and Baroda and the match took place at Bhuj from 29-31 December 1973. The Baroda and Saurashtra teams earned 5 and 3 points, respectively from the drawn match.
