All the regular 4 teams in the Central Zone of the tournament were present there in the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73. The teams like Vidarbha, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh comprised the Central Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1972-73 and they played against each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the zone. Reaching the knock out level of the tournament was also another big aim of the teams, however, only the teams like Vidarbha and Madhya Pradesh became successful to do so from the zone.

The match was drawn during the stipulated duration and the match officials awarded the Vidarbha and Uttar Pradesh teams 5 and 3 points, respectively for the match. The next match of the zone involved the teams like Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan and the teams met with each other at Birsingpur from 16-18 December, 1972.
