The East Zone of the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 was comprised of a number of 4 teams, including the likes of Bengal, Assam, Orissa and Bihar. The Bengal team got a wonderful start in the tournament, as it won the match with a big margin of an innings and 122 runs. The Bengal team also earned the entire 9 points from the match. The Orissa team appeared in the next match also and this time, it played against the Bihar team at Patna from 07-09 December, 1970. The Bihar team played well in this match also and clinched a huge victory of an innings and 135 runs to earn 8 valuable points from it.
The next match of the East Zone saw a battle between the teams of Bengal and Assam, when the two teams played against each other at Nowgong from 07-09 December, 1970. The Bengal team played wonderfully in the match and clinched a victory of an innings and 8 runs for earning 8 points from the match. The last of the East Zone league matches in the Ranji Trophy, 1970-71 saw the two most powerful teams of the zone, Bengal and Bihar clashing with each other at Calcutta from 13-15 December, 1970. The drawn match saw the Bihar team earning 5 points and Bengal earning 3 points from it.
