Pragji Jamnadas Dossa was a Gujarati playwright born in the year 1907. He was the bridge between new and old; old is the Parsi theatre and new is indeed the amateur Gujarati theatre. He also worked for the contribution to children`s theatre. Pragji Jamnadas Dossa was born in Bombay. He began writing in 1924 for the old stage but soon sensed the winds of change and, taking the best elements of its actor-centred performances, introduced new life in his plays. He is the only dramatist of that generation to have composed children`s scripts, sung on radio, taught theatre, edited theatre magazines and penned theatre history, written on Sanskrit dramaturgy and for radio, television, and cinema in Gujarati and Hindi. His best-known and oft-produced plays are Gharno divo i.e. `Lamp of the Family`, Mangalmandir i.e. `Auspicious Temple`, Chhoru kachhoru i.e. `Spoilt Child`, which ran for 300 performances in a Russian translation at the Gorky Theatre and had other shows in the UK, US, east Africa, Sri Lanka, and Myanmar as well. His play `Ifvi chhun tevi i.e. `That`s the Way I Am` translated into German and Czech as well, Dossa also conducted workshops on children`s theatre in India and abroad.
