The name of this college has been derived from Pandit Motilal Nehru, the illustrious Indian freedom fighter. Established in 1964, the college had shown a humble beginning with nearly two hundred students in a school building. Now the number has increased to approximately two thousand students with almost hundred efficient faculty members. The Principal of Moti Lal Nehru College is Dr. Ramesh Sharma who also excels in the arena of Hindi poetry. His pen name is `Divik Ramesh`.

Moti Lal Nehru College offers courses in various disciplines like science, humanities, arts and Commerce. These include B.A. Pass in Office Management & Secretarial Practice, B. A. (Honours) in Economics, English, History, Hindi, Mathematics, Political Science, Sanskrit; B. Sc. (General) in Computer Science; B. Sc. (Honours) in Physics, Chemistry; B. Com (Pass); B. Com (Honours); postgraduate degrees in Arts and commerce subjects are also provided to the pupils.

It is a college, which is noted for its wonderful locales. Its main building is beautified by the gardens that have developed in and around the campus. Moti Lal Nehru College is dotted with huge, extensive grounds. Its library is also well equipped. Special attention also is given to extracurricular activities. Students have the opportunity to join the wing of the National Cadet Corps (NCC) or also enroll themselves in National Service Scheme (NSS). Swimming, basketball, football, tennis, boxing, judo, volleyball, the boxing team and choreography troupes have received prizes in various competitions that were held in last few years.

There are other reasons also for which the Moti Lal Nehru College has caught the attention of people. Interestingly it is one of the eighty colleges where evening classes are held. The achievement of the history department of this college is worth mentioning. In 2006 the department had conducted a national seminar on "Exploring Delhi", it was such a grand success that the seminar received kudos from the President of India and the Prime Minister as well.
