Major Ebden Memorial Cricket Tournament is one of the prestigious cricket competitions organised in Andhra Pradesh. It was started in 1941 in the honour of Major John A. W. Ebden.
History of Major Ebden Memorial Cricket Tournament
The tournament was kick-started in 1941 in the honour of Major John A. W. Ebden. It was regularly organised during the season of October - December at the Andhra Medical College grounds and the Andhra University grounds. Teams from various distant towns used to participate to win the big attractive all-silver Trophy. Maharajah College, Vizianagaram, Mrs. A. V. N. College and Andhra University, Government P. R. College, Kakinada, Arts College, Rajahmundry, Law College, Patchiappa College and Medical College, Madras along with the host Andhra Medical College teams were regular participants. The tournament was started after some gap in 2006.
Major John A. W. Ebden
Mr. Ebden was a professor of Surgery and the Principal of Andhra Medical College (the present Andhra Medical College). He was also the chief architect of the college in its formative years. Mr. Ebden was a sports admirer and encouraged the medical students and faculty members to involve in games like tennis and cricket.
His sudden demise in Delhi left the students and faculty of the medical college grief stuck. They decided to commemorate Dr. Ebden by conducting cricket tournament annually at the college playground inviting teams from many colleges in Andhra region and Madras (now Chennai) state.
