India and World Cup Cricket-1975

The 1975 World Cup was the first edition of the cricket World Cup.

India and World Cup Cricket-1975 In 1975, the first World Cup was a 60 over-a-side affair. The teams were divided into groups with India finding themselves in the same group as England, East Africa and New Zealand. As per the rules, India needed to be in the Top 2 in the group to progress to the semi-finals. Their campaign however began on a disastrous note with India losing to England by a mammoth 202 runs. England batted first and scored 334 runs.

The match as good as over but Sunil Gavaskar did something that he wouldn`t look back at too proudly -batting till the end of 60 overs and scoring a mere 36 off 174 balls. 132 runs was all India managed and it was undoubtedly amongst their worst performances in one-day cricket. India did manage to get the better of minnows East Africa without much trouble clinching a 10-wicket win. But they failed to come up trumps against the New Zealanders - the loss ending their 1975 World Cup campaign.
