Hawa Singh was born in 16th December in the year 1937 in Umarwas, in the Indian state of Haryana, previously a part of rural Punjab. He was a renowned heavyweight boxer from India who dominated the circuit of Asian and Indian amateur boxing for decade in his weight class. In the consecutive edition of Asian Games in 1966 and 1970 respectively, he won gold medal in heavyweight category- a record that was unmatched by any Indian boxer till August, 2008.
Career of Hawa Singh
From 1961 to 1971, Hawa Singh won National Championships in the Heavyweight category a record number of times; 11 consecutive times. He is well known today for being the founder of Bhiwani Boxing Club (BBC), which came to the limelight in 2008 in India for producing 4 out of 5 boxers of the Indian boxing contingent to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, including the Olympic medallist Vijender Kumar.
In the year 1956 he enrolled in the Indian army and soon, by defeating defending champion Mohabbat Singh, became the champion of Western Command in the year 1960.
He took up coaching as a career option after his retirement from competitive boxing, and even co-founded the Bhiwani Boxing Club which produced a slew of Indian boxers in the 1990s and 2000s, including Olympic medallist Vijender Kumar.
Hawa Singh died on 14th August, 2000, 15 days before he was to have received the Dronacharya Award, in Bhiwani District in the Indian state of Haryana.
