Hammer throw is a modern game and is a part of the Olympic events since 1900, though the women version of the sport was not added until 1995. This is a throwing event and part of athlete sport. The main objective in this game is to throw a heavy ball made of metal attached to a wire and handle. The very name "hammer Throw" has been derived from older competition where a real sledge hammer was thrown. Such events are still a part of Scottish Highland Games, where the tools that are used are mainly steel or lead weight at the end of the cane handle.
Just like other events related to throwing, hammer throw is decided by the one who throws the ball for maximum distance. Men`s hammer weighs 7.257 kg and measures 121.5 cm in length and the women`s hammer weighs 4 kg and 119.5 cm in length.
Here the competitor`s highest distance by swinging the hammer above their head to set up the spherical motion. Then they apply force to gain speed by completing one of four turns in the circle. In most part of the competition most of the throwers turn three or sometimes four times. Generally the ball moves in a circular path, with each turn slowly increasing in velocity, with the high point of ball toward the sector and low point at the back of the circle. Thrower releases the ball from front of the circle. The two most crucial factors for long throw are angle of release (45 degree up from the ground) and the speed of the ball (highest possible).
The men`s hammer throw was added as an Olympic event in the year 1900. The IAAF did not ratify the women`s event until 1995. First time the women event was made a part of Olympic was in 2000 Summer Olympics at Sydney.
