Gynaecological disorders refer to those diseases which are peculiar to females. Of them, the chief disorders are connected with menstruation, vaginal discharge, or white liquid laced with pus, diseases connected with pregnancy and childbirth, prolapse of the uterus, infertility, and frigidity.

Menstruation: Menstruation is a periodic change occurring in females. It is also seen in some higher apes, which consist of discharge of blood from the cavity of the womb. It begins between the ages of twelve to thirteen years in warm climates and later in cold regions. The duration of each menstrual period varies slightly from 28 to 30 days. The menstrual flow stops when a woman becomes pregnant, and stops completely around the age of forty-four or fifty years when it is known as the menopause or the grand climacteric.

The main menstruation disorders can be mentioned as amenorrhoea i.e. nashtartava, dysmenorrhoea i.e. kashtartava, and menorrhagia or metrorrhagia.

Vaginal Discharge: Vaginal discharge plays an important role in keeping the vagina clean. This natural process helps to prevent the vagina from any infection. The amount, odour and hue of the discharge may vary depending on the time in menstrual cycle. Most of the time, these changes are normal but if these changes are accompanied by vaginal itching or burning or infection, one should consult with a gynaecologist. Some of the causes that can upset the balance are antibiotic or steroid use, bacterial vaginosis, cervical cancer, diabetes, vaginal atrophy, and vaginitis (irritation in or around the vagina) to name a few.

Diseases Connected with Pregnancy: There are relatively few medical disorders that can prevent pregnancy. This section highlights some of the most frequently encountered medical disorders during pregnancy. Gestational diabetes mellitus is a specific type of diabetes that only pregnant women get. Then there is another disorder called Preeclampsia which refers to an abnormal increase in a woman`s blood pressure after the 20th week of pregnancy. This disorder is often associated with swelling in the face and hands. Eclampsia is another disorder which is more severe form of preeclampsia that can lead to seizures and coma.

Infertility: Infertility talks about the condition where a woman is not able to become pregnant, within certain parameters.

Frigidity: Frigidity is a disorder broadly used to refer to a low libido or sex drive in women. The disorder defines a woman who is emotionally cold or does not respond to her partner`s sexual advances.
