One of the most well known embroidery work of Haryana is Phulkari. This craftwork is a spectacular piece of clothing, created with magnificent colours and intricate embroidery by the artisans. This embroidery work is used in creating an offshoot of the shawl from Kashmir. Though this shawl is derivative of the Kashmiri shawl, the dexterity of the artisans and the excellent creativity with vibrant use of colours has made the item a distinctive one. The local womenfolk of this state are engaged in this `phulkari` embroidery work. According to the tradition of the state, the women of the household start embroidering `phulkari` after the birth of their daughter in the family to present the item at her wedding.

This embroidery work of Haryana is done by creating motifs of birds, flowers and human figures against a red background with great artistry. A variation of `phulakri` embroidery is the `bagh` embroidery. In this type of embroidery, the entire cloth is covered with intricate designs and patterns. The `bagh` design is mostly of geometric pattern with green as the basic colour. The well appraised motifs which are hugely used by the artisans of Haryana are the mor-morni (peacock and peahen), and the lotus, with paisley and floral designs. Apart from creating these embroideries, the artisans of Haryana use spectacular geometric designs for embellishing the carpets which are one of the specialties of Haryana. Among the praised creations, the durries made with white triangles often set against a blue background are quite popular in the local market and all over India. Panipat is the centre for making durries in Haryana.

Embroidery of Haryana has a qualitative creation and the creativity displayed deserve appraisal of the art lovers across the world. Though the artisans of the state adopt the concept from several other states but the patterns and the motifs they use in their creations possess originality.
