Duleep Trophy, 1994-95
North Zone won the championship title in Duleep Trophy, 1994-95, for the fifth consecutive time.

S Manjrekar, Indian CricketAll the regular participating five zonal teams that had played in all the previous editions of the tournament were present in the Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 also. The teams were named as the East Zone, West Zone, North Zone, South Zone and Central Zone and they were selected by the BCCI. The BCCI is the ultimate governing body for cricket in India and it selected the teams from five different geographical locations of the country. The teams were mainly representing their respective zones in the premium domestic cricket tournament of India and they were selected according to the zonal format of Ranji Trophy.

The Central Zone and West Zone teams played against each other in the first match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the two teams played the match at Burnpur from 25-29 October, 1994. The West Zone skipper, S Manjrekar won the toss and decided to bat first in the match. The decision was proved to be a good one, as the West Zone batsmen played wonderfully and scored a huge total of 399 runs in their first innings. A Muzumder (144) and S Dighe (102) scored centuries for West Zone. The Central Zone batsmen also played wonderfully, while replying to the first innings total of West Zone and they scored an even bigger score of 449 runs in their first innings. The two middle order batsmen, P Amre (147) and R Shamsad (127) played two magnificent century knocks for Central Zone. However, the match`s stipulated duration got over, when West Zone reached the score of 241-3 in the second innings and the match ended in a draw. The Central Zone team earned 2 points from the drawn match, as it had a lead in the first innings.

The second match of the Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 was played between the teams of East Zone and South Zone and the match was held at Jamshedpur from 25-29 October, 1994. Winning the toss, the captain of South Zone, W Raman took the decision of batting first in the match. The South Zone batsmen responded very well to their captain`s decision and they scored a huge total of 454 runs in their first innings. In reply to South Zone`s first innings total, the East Zone batsmen failed to play that much well and scored a total of 313 runs in their first innings. The South Zone bowler, Kanwaljit Singh bowled brilliantly and took 6 wickets for 91 runs in East Zone`s first innings. When the South Zone team reached the score of 386-5 in the second innings, the stipulated duration of the match got over. As the match ended in a draw, the match officials awarded the South Zone team 2 points for having a lead in the first innings.

The teams of Central Zone and North Zone were involved in the third match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the match took place at Guwahati from 03-07 November, 1994. The toss of the match was won by the Central Zone captain, P Amre and he decided to bat first in the match. The Central Zone batsmen could not play very well in their first innings and they got all out for a moderate score of 205 runs. The North Zone bowler, A Kapoor bowled brilliantly and took 5 wickets for 86 runs in Central Zone`s first innings. In reply to the first innings total of Central Zone, the North Zone batsmen played extremely well and scored a mammoth total of 600 runs in their first innings. A Sharma scored a brilliant double century of 202 runs and V Rathour (149) and R Puri (100) also played well for North Zone. Trailing by a huge margin of 395 runs, the Central Zone batsmen once again failed to play well in their second innings and got all out for a score of 311 runs. Thus, the North Zone team won the match with a huge margin of an innings and 84 runs and also earned 6 points from the match.

The match between the teams of East Zone and West Zone was the fourth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the match was held at Jamshedpur from 03-07 November, 1994. The East Zone team batted first in the match, as it captain, S Karim decided so after winning the toss. The East Zone batsmen batted well and scored a good score of 306 runs in their first innings. The West Zone batsmen played well in their first innings too and they scored a bigger total of 349 runs in their first innings. U Chatterjee bowled well for East Zone and picked up 5 wickets for 117 runs in West Zone`s first innings. The East Zone batsmen played in their second innings with a deficit of 43 runs in the first innings and as they failed to play well, they could score only 177 runs. S Jedhe took 5 wickets for 68 runs on behalf of West Zone in East Zone`s second innings. Requiring only 135 runs to win the match, the West Zone batsmen batted well in the second innings and achieved the target by losing only 1 wicket. Thus, West Zone earned 6 points from the match by winning it with a huge margin of 9 wickets.

Kanwaljit Singh, Indian Cricket The teams like Central Zone and South Zone appeared against each other in the fifth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the match took place at Calcutta from 12-16 November, 1994. The match saw the Central Zone skipper, N Hirwani winning the toss and deciding to bat first in the match. The Central Zone batsmen scored a moderate total of 263 runs in their first innings, where the South Zone bowler, Ananthapadmanabhan took 6 wickets for 78 runs. The South Zone batsmen showed a good batting display, while replying to the first innings total of Central Zone. They scored a good total of 313 runs in their first innings. Playing with a deficit of 50 runs in the first innings, the Central Zone batsmen failed to apply themselves on the crease and got all out for only 156 run in their second innings. Kanwaljit Singh took 7 wickets for 33 runs on behalf of South Zone in Central Zone`s second innings. The South Zone team needed only 107 runs to win in the second innings and the team achieved the target without losing even a single wicket. The South Zone team won the match with a huge margin of 10 wickets and also earned 6 points.

The North Zone and West Zone were the teams that played against each other in the sixth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the two teams played the match at Silchar from 12-16 November, 1994. The captain of North Zone, A Sharma won the toss and took the decision of batting first in the match. Batting first in the match, the North Zone team scored a moderate total of 276 runs in their first innings. The West Zone batsmen faced a lot of troubles and scored only 186 runs in their first innings, while replying to North Zone`s first innings total. The stipulated duration of the match ended when the North Zone team reached the score of 318 runs in the second innings. As the match ended in a draw, the North Zone team earned 2 points for having a lead in the first innings.

The match between the teams of East Zone and Central Zone was the seventh match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the match was organised at Calcutta from 21-25 November, 1994. Winning the toss, the Central Zone skipper, N Hirwani took the decision of batting first in the match and got good support from his batsmen. The Central Zone batsmen batted wonderfully and scored a huge total of 469 runs in their first innings. The East Zone batsmen faced a lot of troubles while batting in their first innings and became able to score only 274 runs, before getting all out. The Central Zone skipper, N Hirwani took 6 wickets for 76 runs for his team in East Zone`s first innings. Leading by a huge margin of 195 runs, the Central Zone skipper declared the second innings on a score of 106-1, setting up a target of 302 runs to win for East Zone. However, by the time East Zone reached the score of 183-5, the match`s stipulated duration got over. The Central Zone team won 2 points from the drawn match for having a lead in the first innings.

The North Zone and South Zone teams played against each other in the eighth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the two teams played the match at Patna from 21-24 November, 1994. The toss of the match was won by the South Zone captain, W Raman and he decided to bat first in the match. Raman got good response from his batsmen, as the South Zone batsmen scored a good total of 315 runs in their first innings. Though, the South Zone team scored a good total in the first innings, the North Zone batsmen showed their own talent and expertise in their first innings. They scored 456 runs, before getting all out and took a handy lead of 141 runs over South Zone. The North Zone bowlers then bowled nicely in South Zone`s second innings and restricted the opponents` innings to only 157 runs. Thus, the North Zone team needed only 17 runs in the second innings to win the match, which they achieved with ease, without losing any wicket. The North Zone team earned 6 points by winning the match with a huge margin of 10 wickets.

The match between the teams of East Zone and North Zone was the ninth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 and the match was held at Calcutta from 30 November-04 December, 1994. The skipper of East Zone, S Karim took the decision of batting first in the match after winning the toss, however, the East Zone team could not score a good total in the first innings. The East Zone batsmen could score only 250 runs, before getting all out in their first innings. The North Zone batsmen gave a superb reply to the first innings total of East Zone and scored a mammoth total of 716 runs in their first innings. Bantoo Singh became the top scorer for North Zone with 214 runs to his name. Trailing by 466 runs in the first innings, the East Zone batsmen found it quite difficult to bat well in the second innings and they could score 411 runs before the end of play. Thus, the match ended in a draw and the North Zone team earned 2 points from the match for having a lead in the first innings.

The last and tenth match of Duleep Trophy, 1994-95 was played between the teams of South Zone and West Zone and the two teams played the match at Rourkela from 30 November-04 December, 1994. After winning the toss, the captain of South Zone, W Raman took the decision of batting first in the match. However, the South Zone batsmen could not play that much well in their first innings and they scored a moderate total of 233 runs, before getting all out. In reply to the first innings total of South Zone, the West Zone batsmen showed a wonderful batting display and scored a huge total of 566 runs in their first innings. The West Zone opener, S Bhave played a magnificent double century knock of 292 runs to become the top scorer for his team. Though, they were having a huge deficit of 333 runs in the first innings, the South Zone batsmen played outstandingly in their second innings. They reached the score of 531-5 in their second innings, before the stipulated duration of the match got over. The South Zone skipper, W Raman became the top scorer for his team by playing an outstanding knock of 250 runs in the second innings. However, the match eventually ended in a draw and the match officials awarded 2 points to the West Zone team, as it had a lead in the first innings of the match. The tournament officials calculated the total points secured by each team from the league matches, once all the matches were completed. After the calculation, the tournament officials announced the North Zone team as the winner of the championship title in Duleep Trophy, 1994-95, as it earned a total of 16 points from the league matches.
