K Srikkanth, Indian CricketThe Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 was the 32nd edition of the tournament and all the five regular participating zonal teams were present in this tournament. The teams were selected by the tournament organisers, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) from five different geographical locations of India. The teams were named as the Central Zone, East Zone, West Zone, North Zone and South Zone and they were mainly selected according to the zonal format of Ranji Trophy.

The first match of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 was played between the teams of South Zone and East Zone and the match was held at Vishakhapatnam from 21-24 August, 1992. The South Zone captain, M Azharuddin won the toss and took the decision of batting first in the match. The decision of Azharuddin did not get much support from the South Zone batsmen, as they got all out for a moderate total of 224 runs in their first innings. The opener, K Srikkanth became the top scorer for South Zone with 49 runs to his name. S Mukherjee bowled wonderfully for East Zone and picked up 6 wickets for only 77 runs in South Zone`s first innings. Avinash Kumar also bowled well and took 4 wickets for 94 runs on behalf of East Zone. While replying to the moderate first innings total of South Zone, the East Zone batsmen could not play well. However, they did well to surpass the first innings total of South Zone and got all out for a score of 254 runs in their first innings. The opener, Sunil Kumar played a good innings of 90 runs for East Zone and also became the top scorer for his team, while S Karim scored 79 runs. S Raju took 6 wickets for 71 runs on behalf of South Zone in East Zone`s first innings. Trailing by 30 runs in the first innings, the South Zone batsmen batted well in the second innings and scored a good total of 341 runs, before getting all out. W Raman (85), A Kumble (67) and R Singh (65) were the premium contributors to South Zone`s second innings total. Avinash Kumar and R Biswal took 5 wickets, each for East Zone in South Zone`s second innings. Chasing a target of 312 runs to win, the East Zone batsmen found it quite difficult to score runs in their second innings. They faced a lot of troubles while batting in the second innings and eventually got all out for a small score of only 141 runs. S Raju once again bowled outstandingly for South Zone and took 6 wickets for 46 runs in East Zone`s second innings. Thus, the South Zone team won the match with a good margin of 172 runs and also entered into the Semi-Finals of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93.

M Azharuddin, Indian Cricket The teams of Central Zone and West Zone played against each other in the first Semi-Final of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 and the match took place at Madras from 28 August-01 September, 1992. Winning the toss, the Central Zone skipper, Yusuf Ali Khan decided to bat first in the match and the Central Zone batsmen responded to their captain`s decision, quite well. They played nicely in their first innings and scored a total of 347 runs, before getting all out. P Amre was the top scorer for Central Zone with 83 runs to his name, while S Ankola took 5 wickets for 67 runs on behalf of West Zone in Central Zone`s first innings. The West Zone batsmen failed to apply themselves on the crease properly, while batting in their first innings and got all out for 261 runs. R Chauhan caused most of the damage to West Zone batting line-up in the first innings, as he took 6 wickets for 62 runs for Central Zone. After attaining a good lead of 86 runs in the first innings, the Central Zone batsmen played well in the second innings also. They increased the overall lead to 342 runs, before getting all out for a score of 256 runs in their second innings. The West Zone team required to achieve a huge target of 343 runs to win, in the second innings, however, the West Zone batsmen could not get the target. They once again batted poorly in their second innings and eventually got out for a small score of only 163 runs. P Gandhe bowled nicely for Central Zone and picked up 6 wickets for 65 runs in West Zone`s second innings. Thus, the Central Zone team reached the Final of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 by winning this match with a good margin of 179 runs.

Kapil Dev, Indian Cricket The second Semi-Final of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 saw the teams of South Zone and North Zone playing against each other at Bangalore from 28 August-01 September, 1992. The toss of the match was won by the captain of North Zone, Maninder Singh and he took the decision of batting first in the match. He got very good support for his decision from his teammates, as the North Zone batsmen played well and scored a good total of 317 runs in their first innings. A Sharma scored the highest of 61 runs for North Zone, while V Yadav and M Prabhakar scored 56 and 55 runs, respectively for their team. Though the North Zone team scored a good total in their first innings, the South Zone batsmen never looked to be tensed or demotivated, while batting in their first innings. The South Zone batsmen showed a good batting display and scored a good total of 367 runs in their first innings. The skipper, M Azharuddin almost single-handedly carried the first innings of South Zone by playing a wonderful century knock of 153 runs. C Sharma took 5 wickets for 87 runs on behalf of North Zone in South Zone`s first innings. The North Zone batsmen played in their second innings with a deficit of 50 runs in the first innings and they played quite well to score a huge total of 356 runs for 9 wickets, in the second innings. The North Zone captain declared the second innings on the score of 356-9, setting up a target of 407 runs to win for South Zone. The South Zone batsmen failed miserably in their second innings, while chasing a huge target of 407 runs and they got all out for a tiny score of only 106 runs. The North Zone captain, Maninder Singh caused most of the damage to South Zone batting line-up in the second innings, by picking up 6 wickets for only 23 runs. Thus, the North Zone team clinched a huge victory of 200 runs in the match and entered into the Final of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 to play against Central Zone.

The Final of Duleep Trophy, 1992-93 was played between the teams of Central Zone and North Zone and the two teams played the match at Hyderabad from 09-13 September, 1992. The Central Zone captain, K Patel was the winner of the toss in the match and he decided to field first in the match. The North Zone batsmen batted well and got all out for a moderate score of 268 runs in their first innings, after being invited to bat first. S Sharma bowled very well and took 5 wickets for 66 runs on behalf of Central Zone in North Zone`s first innings. The North Zone bowlers then showed their excellence with the ball and successfully restricted Central Zone`s first innings to a little score of only 97 runs. None of the Central Zone batsmen could play well in their first innings and as a result, the North Zone team took a huge lead of 171 in the first innings. Having such a good lead in the first innings, the North Zone batsmen batted with more confidence in the second innings. The North Zone skipper, Kapil Dev declared the second innings on after reaching the score of 147-5 and thus, set a target of 319 runs to win the match. However, the stipulated duration of the match got over by the time the North Zone team declared the second innings and the match eventually ended in a draw. The match officials declared the North Zone team as the winner of the match as well as the championship title in Duleep Trophy, 1992-93, for having a lead in the first innings.
