Dattatray Ramchandra Bhat

Dattatray Ramchandra Bhat was born in the year 1921. He witnessed the transition from the traditional to experimental theatre and helped in the development of modern Marathi theatre as well. Ramchandra Bhat was born in Nashik. He passed the matriculate from that place only. From his school days, he participated in plays and melas i.e. music programmes, especially during the Ganesh festival. He first acted in 1934. He contributed much to Akhyan, the traditional narrative form. His father died when he was still young, and he had to shoulder the responsibilities of the family. He opened a hotel but gave it up and accepted a clerk`s job in the postal department. Then he worked as canteen manager in the Ordnance Depot at Nashik.

He entered films as assistant under renowned directors like Vishram Bedekar, who had trained him in acting. His role of Bhadrayu in Atre`s humorous play Sashtang namaskar received praise, but his inspired performance as Iago in Shakespeare`s Othello in I960 won him glory. Sasa ani kasav i.e. `Hare and Tortoise` in 1961 fetched him the coveted award in the state competition. His performances in P. L. Deshpande`s Varyavarchi varat i.e. `Procession in the Air` in 1962, Vijay Tendulkar`s Mi jinkalo mi haralo i.e. `I Won, I Lost` in 1963, Atre`s Dr Lagu in 1967, and V. V. Shirwadkar`s Natasamrat i.e. `The Actor-Emperori in 1970 earned accolades. He often acted under Damu Kenkre and Vijaya Mehta. He wrote an autobiography titled Jhale mrigajal ata jalamaya i.e. ` Mirage Becomes Water` in 1983. This cultural figure died in the year of 1984.
