Carpets of Eastern India are specimens of exquisite beauty coupled with dexterous artistry.

Carpets of Eastern India are well-known for their innovative designs, patterns, textures and beautiful shades. The Eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Bihar and Orissa are said to manufacture unique forms of carpets, a majority of which are exported abroad. These regions possess a very ancient history of carpet weaving.

The northern regions of the state of West Bengal are renowned for their versatile kinds of carpets, particularly in the areas like North Dinajpur district, Darjeeling and others. The Tibetan Refugee Centre started encouraging the refugees in the field of weaving carpets to provide them financial security and sustainability. Vegetable dyes which utilize bright colours and chemical dyes are employed to weave these carpets. Patterns of dragons and flowers adorn these beautiful crafts. Some Tibetan motifs are also used which include those of leather coins, `Tashi Takgye`, dog`s paw and others. The carpet weaving industry in the district of North Dinajpur is also reputable for its multiple kinds of colorful carpets. This local industry of Dinajpur is now an important source of livelihood for the regional inhabitants.

Carpets of Bihar
Bihar boasts of an ancient culture of carpet weaving as it is believed to have originated during the age of the Mauryas and the existence of Lord Budha. The area of Danapur in the state of Bihar is quite famous for its carpets. Later, this industry flourished and pile carpets started to be manufactured in this region under the patronage of the Mughals. Historical records claim that several kings, `nawabs` and `jagirdars` promoted the production and utilization of diverse forms of carpets in this Indian state.

Various types of patterns are employed to weave carpets in Eastern India and they are highly favoured by the local people.
