Bolo Punch, Kickboxing TechniqueBolo punch is a special type of punch used in Martial art technique. It is one of the conventional punches in boxing like the jab, uppercut, hook and cross. The bolo punch is an advanced technique. It is used many times during a bout and can cause powerful knockouts. Because of the distance and torque one can put into it, it can be a devastating blow when it lands. While the bolo punch can be an effective punch, it is more commonly used as a distraction.

Ceferino Garcia is commonly referred to as the inventor of the bolo punch. But it is often debated that much before Ceferino Garcia, it was actually Filipino boxer named Macario Flores who used it in the year 1924. Garcia, Kid Gavilan and Sugar Ray Leonard are widely recognized as three of the best bolo punchers in boxing history that used bolo punches to great effect. Roy Jones Jr. and Joe Calzaghe also use the bolo punch frequently.

When Ceferino Garcia was asked how he came to develop the wide sweeping uppercut, Garcia said that as a youth he cut sugarcane in the Philippines with a bolo knife, which he would wield in a sweeping uppercut fashion. When used in boxing, the bolo punch`s range of motion is like that of a hook combined with an uppercut.

In the modern day scenario, the fighters have a lot of punches in their repertoire. And having bolo punch as their stock punches means it can be used to manoeuvre a punch during a competition.

It is most important aspect is a circular motion performed with one arm to distract the attention of an opponent, causing the opponent to either take his eyes off the attacker"s other arm or actually focus on the fighter"s circling arm. When the opponent concentrates on the hand that is circling, the bolo puncher will usually sneak in a punch with the opposite hand. When the rival concentrates on the hand that is not moving, the bolo puncher will usually follow through with a full punch. By dropping the back hand and pretending to make an obvious wide sweeping throw, the opponent"s eyes gravitate to the dropped hand, leaving the puncher free to throw the front arm.
