Bhaskar Chandavarkar was born in the year of 1936. He was well known for his creativity and spirit of experimentation. Born in Pune, he learnt sitar from Ravi Shankar and Umashankar Misra, and classical vocal too. Later he studied contemporary Western music and jazz. He worked at the Film and Television Institute of India, from 1965 to 1980, as a resident composer and teacher of applied music. He also taught courses in other Indian institutions and abroad. With his knowledge of both Hindustani and Western music, he carved for himself a special place as composer, and freelanced in this capacity after 1980.
He scored the music for many important Marathi theatre productions. His varied and vigorous music for Vijay Tendulkar`s Ghashiram Kotwal in 1972 broke away from the fetters of stage convention, deploying Marathi devotional songs ironically yet integrating them with the narrative. He wrote soundtracks for nearly forty films in several Indian languages, Mrinal Sen`s Khandbar, Aparna Sen`s Parama in 1985, Vijaya Mehta`s Rao Sabeb in 1986, and Amol Palekar`s Thodasa rumani ho jaye i.e. `Let`s Get Romantic` in 1990 ranking among his most successful and award-winning ventures. He was nominated Producer Emeritus of Akashvani and Doordarshan in 1989.
