It was set up as the Western Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, but later it was renamed after former Prime Minister of India, Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

The ABVIMAS offers mountaineering, skiing and water sports courses like the Advance Mountaineering Course, Advance Skiing Course, Advance Water Sports and Water Sports Course, etc.
