Apoorva Kumar Sengupta was an Indian cricketer of national and international arena. He served as the Lieutenant General in Indian Army. He was born on 3rd August 1938. He hailed from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh. Apoorva Kumar Sengupta was an Indian cricketer who played in one Test Series in international arena in the year 1959.
Cricket Career of Apoorva Kumar Sengupta
The test appearance of Apoorva Kumar Sengupta came in the middle of a major controversy in Indian cricket. Ghulam Ahmed announced his retirement a few days before the Madras Test against the West Indies in 1958-59, and Vijay Manjrekar dropped out due to an injury. This led to a confusing situation where Jasu Patel, A. G. Kripal Singh, Manohar Hardikar and Sengupta were all considered. The captain Polly Umrigar wanted Hardikar but when the President of the Board of Cricket Control of India (BCCI) insisted that he pick Patel, Umrigar resigned during the night before the match.
In the end, Apoorva Kumar Sengupta and Kripal Singh played that match. Apoorva Kumar Sengupta was dismissed for 1 and 8 by Wes Hall and Roy Gilchrist.
Apoorva Kumar Sengupta was referred as a very good all-rounder, right hand opening batsman, leg-break and googly bowler and slip field. Apoorva Kumar Sengupta had made his first class debut earlier in that season against West Indies Cricket Team.

Apoorva Kumar Sengupta played for Indian Army Services. There he scored 32 and 100 not out. Two months later he took 6 for 32 against Delhi Cricket Team on his first appearance in the Ranji Trophy. These two performances had led to the selection for the Test match. Apoorva Kumar Sengupta continued to play first class cricket for ten years. His only other hundred was a 146 not out scored against Bombay Cricket Team in the 1959-1960 semi finals.
Apoorva Kumar Sengupta served as an officer in the Indian Army from the time of independence. He was awarded the title PVSM and AVSM. Apoorva Kumar Sengupta had the honour to rise to the rank of Lieutenant General of 3 stars in the Indian Army, during his career.
Lieutenant general Apoorva Kumar Sengupta was also selected to serve as the defence attaché for United States of America (USA) and Canada, based out of Washington (District of Columbia) DC.
Personal Life of Apoorva Kumar Sengupta
After retiring from the Indian Army Service, he lived with his wife Meena Sengupta in New Delhi. He had two children Amitabh Sengupta and Surojit Sengupta.
Lieutenant General Apoorva Kumar Sengupta died in the R and R Hospital in New Delhi on September 14, 2013.
