Ramnagar Fort is located in Udhampu
r, Jammu and Kashmir
near Sheesh Mahal. According to the historians, the fort was built by Raja Suchet Singh, the son of Maharaja Ranbir Singh; he died in the year 1844. It is said that the kings wife performed sati nearby the fort campus. There is a Samadhi of the queen at the fort campus. In the year 1972, Ramnagar Fort was renovated and undertaken by the Archeological Survey of India
Structure of Ramnagar Fort
Ramnagar Fort is square in shape with polygonal bastions to support the four corners of the fort. The fort is three storied with battlements and merinos. There is a courtyard around the central area of the fort with cells and vaulted chambers, where cannonballs are stored. The gateway is adorned with the images of Lord Ganesha
, Goddess Durga
and Lord Hanuman
. The fort is surrounded by a moat and access to it is gained through a narrow bridge on the southeastern side.
