Sathiyan Gnanasekaran is an Indian professional table tennis player who won gold in men's team event in 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast, Australia. He is currently ranked 46th in the world as of April 2018 and has become India’s highest-ranked player in the latest International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) rankings. He was a member of the Indian team that took the bronze in the 2011 Junior World Championships. He is from Chennai and was educated as an engineer. He was educated in St. Joseph's college of Engineering, Chennai.
Career of Sathiyan Gnanasekaran
Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has been consistently ranked as one of the top table tennis players from India. In September 2016 he won the Belgium Open table tennis title in the men's singles category which was his first pro title and became the only second Indian table tennis player to win an ITTF event. In 2017, Sathiyan won bronze in ITTF Challenge - Thailand, ITTF Challenge - Belgium, ITTF Major - Swedish; Silver in ITTF Major- Bulgaria in doubles men category. He won gold in the ITTF Challenge - Spanish Open, in Almeria (2017) in the men's singles category. In 2018, he defeated Yuya Oshima to enter men's singles pre-quarterfinals of the ITTF Wold Tour Platinum Qatar Open.
Sathiyan Gnanasekaran has received the TOISA Table Tennis player of the year award 2018 (Jury choice). He is at present being supported by the GoSports Foundation through the Rahul Dravid Athlete Mentorship Programme. He had been signed up with the top German club Grünwettersbach in recent times for the esteemed German Bundesliga top division league.
