Derivation of Santhome Beach
The beach gets its name from Saint Thomas, one of the disciples of Jesus Christ. In the early era, an apostle was martyred in the city of Chennai and his tomb was placed in Mylapore. Later, a church, now known as the San Thome Basilica, was constructed over the tomb.

Location of Santhome Beach
Santhome beach is located in Santhome, a small locality in Mylapore region of Chennai. Santhome beach lies approximately 3 kilometres away from the famous Marine Beach. It is easily accessible, as many vehicles ply between the beach and the main city. Santhome beach is located in the southern part of Marina Beach, one of the most popular beaches of Chennai. The beach is sandier than the other beaches of India.

There are many car rentals that take passengers from the airport to the city centre. Chennai is easily accessible by road too. There are many state transport vehicles including buses and taxies that plight between the city and other parts of the state. Buses run between major cities in the state at regular intervals and tariffs depend on the bus service and distance. Chennai has three major railway stations that have depot trains from all over the country. Central, Egmore and Tambaram railway stations are the main halts for many important trains passing through the city.

Climate of Santhome Beach
Santhome beach enjoys beautiful summers that set in by March and lasts till May. The temperature rise up to 40 degrees Celsius during the day and the humidity makes it all the more hot. The city is practically unbearable during these months and tourists seldom plan their trips during this season. Monsoon sets in by July and though the city receives lots of rain, there"s little relief from the heat. The roads are often blocked, leading to heavy traffic jams during this season. Monsoons last till early November, though the amount of rainfall begins falling by September. Chennai is at its best during the months of December to February. The temperatures drop down to approximately 18 degrees at night and the days are comparatively pleasant. This is the best time for sightseeing and enjoying beach activities.
