Sangram Durg is a land fort which is located in Chakan in Pune in the state of Maharashtra. The fortress was mostly ruled by the forces of the Maratha Empire during the reign of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj in 17th century. It is also known as Chakan Fort.
History of Sangram Durg
Firangoji Narsala, the army commander of the Maratha Empire, served as the Killedar or the garrison commander of Sangram Durg. Shaista Khan, a General in the Mughal army invaded the region of Poona (now Pune) and attacked the fortress with almost 10,000 soldiers. Firangoji fought against the Mughal army with only 200 men in fierce guerrilla warfare. He managed to defend the fortress for almost 2 months.
Later the Mughal forces tried to gain entry into the fort by digging a tunnel to the fortress. The army of Mughal Dynasty under the leadership of Shaista Khan filled the tunnel with explosives blew up the fort wall. This was a huge setback and in the ensuing battle several men of the Maratha army were annihilated. Shaista Khan or Shayeste Khan became impressed with the bravery of Firangoji Narsala and thus offered his and the remaining soldiers safe passage.
