Hakim Ayn al-Mulk Shirazi, an Iranian physician arrived in India during the reign of Emperor Akbar. A renowned physician, surgeon and ophthalmologist, Hakim was married to Faydi's sister. From his mother's side, his lineage could be traced from the famous Hakim Dawai. Besides being a physician Hakim Ayn al-Mulk Shirazi was also a poet, his creative side being nurtured through poems. His medical expertise and proficiency help him to develop a close relationship with the Emperor. On several occasions he accompanied the Emperor on various expeditions.
Hakim Ayn al-Mulk Shirazi is said to have treated the Emperor effectively when he was accidentally injured by an arrow shot by Qatlaq Khan. He was operated by the Hakim which resulted in the wound to heal in a week.
Hakim Ayn al-Mulk Shirazi also exhibited his gallantry in different battles. A diplomat by nature, he was well appreciated by the Emperor who entrusted him with various responsibilities. In 1565 he delivered a jirman from Emperor Akbar to Chengiz Khan, an influential man in Ahmedabad. The emperor, in 1575 paid a visit to the eastern provinces of the empire. He was then accompanied by the Hakim. The notable physician was also sent to Deccan, assigned with the duty of directing and guiding Adil Khan of Bijapur. On his return, he was appointed as the commander of the Army of Sanbhal in 1578. The same year, he was also nominated to the high office of Sadarat (governor) of Bengal. Later after four years he assisted the Emperor in suppressing the uprising of Nayabat Khan of Sanbhal. In 1595 A.D. Hakim Ayn al-Mulk Shiraz died at Hadhia.
