The Sawai Mansingh Stadium suffered pathetic fate till 1987 where it hosted only one Test match. It was in the month of February when Pakistan President General Zia-ul-Haq flew across the border to witness the second day test match between India and Pakistan as part of "Cricket for Peace" campaign. The game ended on a draw because of bad weather.
The stadium has made its international debut in the year 1983-84 with an ODI match between India and Pakistan. The Sawai Mansingh Stadium has hosted World Cup matches of 1987 and 1996. It was called a one test match wonder until Lalit Modi took up the mantle of the Jaipur Cricket Association. While Lalit Modi was at the helm the stadium saw major changes in infra structure and facilities. A major renovation programme was undertaken where it was transformed into a modern state-of-the-art stadium keeping in mind international standards. After the renovation the stadium hosted many international matches, both test and ODI. In the recent times of course, Sawai Mansingh Stadium has hosted three editions of IPL matches and it is the home ground for Rajasthan Royals Team.
