The Plate Group A in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 saw the participation of 6 teams that were put in to the group, for showing poor performance in the previous year`s edition. The teams were not coming from any specific region of India and most of them were actually representing various Indian states in the most popular domestic cricket tournament of India. The teams included the likes of Goa, Orissa, Tripura, Saurashtra, Vidarbha and Himachal Pradesh and they competed with each other for becoming one of the top two teams in the group. The teams also gave their best efforts to secure a berth in the knock out level of the Plate Group and the teams like Orissa and Saurashtra eventually did so from the Group A. The Orissa and Saurashtra teams earned the highest points from the group matches to do so and they also competed with the top two teams of the Plate Group B for the Plate Group championship.

The Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 started with the match between the teams of Goa and Orissa and the two teams played the match at Margao from 23-26 November, 2005. The match remained drawn during the specified period of time and the Orissa team earned 2 points from the match. The Goa team failed to earn any points from the match. The Tripura and Saurashtra teams played against each other in the second match of the group and the match was held at Agartala from 23-26 November, 2005. The Saurashtra team earned 4 points from the match by winning it with a margin of 8 wickets. The Tripura team could not earn even a single point from the match. The third match of the group saw the teams of Vidarbha and Himachal Pradesh playing against each other at Nagpur from 23-26 November, 2005. The Himachal Pradesh team won the closely contested match with a margin of 14 runs for earning 4 points and the Vidarbha team remained pointless.

The fourth of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 was played between the teams of Orissa and Saurashtra and the match was held at Cuttack from 01-04 December, 2005. The winner of the match was the Orissa team with a margin of an innings and 10 runs and the team also earned 5 points from the match. The Saurashtra team could not earn any points from the match. The Vidarbha team then played against the Goa team in then next match of the group and the match took place at Nagpur from 01-04 December, 2005. The match was won by the Vidarbha team with a margin of 8 wickets and the team earned 4 points from the match. The Goa team remained pointless in the match. The Goa team appeared in the next match of the group also and this time, it played against the Tripura team at Margao from 09-12 December, 2005. The Goa team earned 2 points from the drawn match and the Tripura team failed to earn any points.

The match between the teams of Vidarbha and Orissa was the seventh of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the match took place at Nagpur from 09-12 December, 2005. The Orissa team clinched a victory of 174 runs in the match to earn 4 points and the Vidarbha team remained pointless in the match. The Orissa team then played against the Tripura team in the next match of the group and the match was held at Cuttack from 17-20 December, 2005. The drawn match saw the Orissa team earning 2 points and the Tripura team remaining pointless. The next match of the group involved the teams like Saurashtra and Vidarbha and the two teams played the match at Rajkot from 17-20 December, 2005. The Vidarbha team earned 4 points from the match by clinching a victory of 7 wickets. However, the Saurashtra team could not earn even a single point from the match.

The teams of Saurashtra and Goa then appeared in the tenth of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 and the match was held at Rajkot from 25-28 December, 2005. The Saurashtra team played very well in the match and thrashed Goa by a huge margin of 10 wickets to earn 5 points. The Goa team failed to earn any points from the match. The Vidarbha and Tripura teams were involved in the next match of the group and the match took place at Agartala from 25-28 December, 2005. The winner of the match was the Vidarbha team with a margin of 138 runs and the team also earned 4 points from the match. The Tripura team remained pointless in the match. The Orissa and Himachal Pradesh teams then met with each other in the next match of the group, which was held at Cuttack from 26-29 December, 2005. The match saw the Orissa team winning by a margin of an innings and 293 runs and earning 5 points and it also saw the Himachal Pradesh team remaining pointless.

The next match of the Plate Group A was played between the teams of Tripura and Himachal Pradesh and the match took place at Agartala from 02-05 January, 2006. The match was won by the Tripura team with a margin of 130 runs and the team also earned 4 points from it. The Himachal Pradesh team could not earn any points from the match. The Himachal Pradesh team appeared in the next match of the group also and this time, it played against the Saurashtra team at Rajkot from 09-12 January, 2006. The Saurashtra team played well in the match to clinch a victory of 8 wickets for earning 4 points and the Himachal Pradesh team remained pointless in the match. The last of the Plate Group A matches in the Ranji Trophy, 2005-06 involved the teams like Goa and Himachal Pradesh and the two teams played the match at Panaji from 17-20 January, 2006. The Himachal Pradesh clinched a victory of 6 wickets in the match to earn 4 points and the Goa team failed to earn any points from the match.
